Hello, I’m Kim Jin-Oh, the director of NHI(New Hair Institute) Today, I’m going to explain the change in hair after hair transplant, that is, how hairs fall out, grow, and how long it takes to see the result. I will explain it through a graph. As you know, you get a hair transplant on the first day.

Starting with the whole 100% of hair on the first day, the transplanted hairs begin to fall out starting from about the 10th to 14th day and may continue up to a month. The transplant itself is very stressful to our hairs. As the hairs gradually fall out, after about a month almost 70%~80% of the transplanted hairs would have been lost. It varies slightly from person to person.

In some cases, nearly 70 to 80% of the transplanted hairs keep growing without falling out, but I’ll tell you the average number here. After getting the surgery, the transplanted hairs will continue to fall out, and after about a month or so, about 20 to 30 percent out of all transplanted hairs will be left. Once the transplanted hairs fall out, they go into a telogen for at least 2 to 3 months.

The telogen refers to a period of rest after the hair grows. From the 3rd month (onwards), you will be able to see an increase in hairs that had initially fallen out. 6 months after the surgery, the transplanted hairs will grow up to about 70 to 80%. 3 to 6 months after surgery is the period when the hair grows the most after the fall-out. At the 6th month, the transplanted hairs would have grown up to about 70%.

Between the 6th months to one year, your hairs would have reached almost 100%. From 2 weeks to a month after the surgery, the transplanted hairs fall out a lot. The period up to a month is a very important time. The period of 1 to 3 months after surgery is called ‘the Dark Ages’. It’s not really a medical term. I think it was first used on a website, but nevertheless it seems very appropriate.

During this period, there can be a case of ‘Post-Operative Shedding’. I don’t know who made this term either. The occurrence of fall out for not only the transplanted hairs but also for the existing hairs is called ‘Post-Operative Sedding’(Medically, it is called “effluvium”, and is sometimes referred to as “shock loss”)

When hair transplant surgery is performed, the hairs around the donor and the transplant area is impacted. There are two large vessels that lies above the eyes. There are also two behind our necks, which affect our hairs when impacted. In this case, hairs don’t die, it just goes into hibernation. 3 to 6 months after the surgery is the most exciting period, and the transplanted hairs regrow up tp 70%.

The rest of the period is when the rest of the 30% regrows. 6 months to 1 year after surgery. As you know, there is an early period post surgery that is the most important to the graft survival. Among this period, which is when the survival of graft is decided, the 3rd~4th day post surgery is the most important. Rather than merely describing it as a graft survival period, we call it the most important period.

This period is when new capillaries grow and start to provide nutrients to the graft. Since the capillaries would not have grown as of the 3rd to 4th day, this period is when the graft is extremely sensitive to the outer environment and, hence, is fighting for its survival.

So, this is a period when not getting stressed, using the hair tonic to help the survival of the graft, maintaining moisture, and being cautious of hitting the transplanted area is important. Second, during the 10th to 12th post surgery, the graft survival would be almost 99% to 100% completed.

If you scratch your scalp or pull out your hair before the 10th to 12th day after surgery, hair follicles often fall out along with the hair. Today, I explained the the different changes over the period after hair transplant and how the transplanted hair grows after surgery. Don’t be too anxious, especially for those who are going through the dark age.

This is an average number, and I recommend you understand the process will follow this kind of flow. You’ll be very anxious if your hair doesn’t grow as fast as you expect. Some people get their transplanted hair growing for more than a year after the surgery, so I urge you not be too anxious and wait. Well, I guess I’ll come back with better contents next time.
