Hello, I’m Kim Jin-Oh, the director of NHI(New Hair Institute) Hair is usually used as the material for hair transplant. Especially, the hairs of the back and the side areas are usually used as donors. Hairs are taken from those parts and put on areas where we want to transplant. However, body hair can also be a material for hair transplant as well.

Hair on the arms, legs, chest and beard, etc. are all materials for hair transplant. So what about the actual results you ask? Things such as hair growth cycle or the growth length should be considered to see whether or not body hair such as beard, chest, arm, leg hair can be of good alternative material for hair transplant. All body hairs can’t completely replace hairs.

This chart shows that the growth cycle of hair is the longest amongst all other body hairs. For hair, the ratio of the growth phase takes up 85% of the cycle and the period of the growth phase is 2 to 6 years. (*growth phase is usually called the anagen phase) In conclusion, hair is the best material for hair transplant.

So for hair transplant surgery, body hair or beard is used when there is not enough amount of hair to be extracted from the donor area of the head, or if it will be used in areas of less importance. The hair is used as primary option for the most important parts(ex.the front part of the hairline, the most severe parts of hair loss)

and the body hair or beard is used as an alternative for the inner parts of the scalp below the hair or for less visible areas. If you look at the diagram, the beard is a little less than hair, but the ratio of its growth phase is 70%, and the period of the growth phase is about a year, which makes it the second best resource after hair. Body hairs such as chest hair have a very low growth phase ratio of 30%.

The growth phase ratio is 85% for hair and 70% for beard, while it is 30% for other body hairs meaning 70% of these body hairs won’t work well. And when we say that it won't work well we mean that such hairs will not be visible from the outside, are too thin, or won’t grow well. This is why the efficiency is lost. As a material for transplant, you need to think of body hair as an alternative thing to beard.

All in all it’s best to look at the selection of options in the order of hair as the primary option, then beard, and then finally other body hairs. Western people have a lot more chest hair, beard, and actually even more hair than Koreans. Therefore, transplants using body hairs are more widely done than in Korea, but Asians, especially Koreans, don’t have much beard as do I. They don’t have much body hair either.
