Hello, I’m Kim Jin-Oh, the director of NHI(New Hair Institute) Today, I’m going to talk about the amount of graft needed for surgeries. Hair transplant is a surgery where its results are largely affected by the amount of graft used. If the amount of hair that can be transplanted is large, the transplant hairs can be arranged more abundantly and densely. If I use a lot of grafts, it’s easier to get better results.

Many people who come to get a hair transplant, of course, hope to get the best possible results. There are quite a lot of people who ask to lower their hairlines and additionally bring their side hairlines forward to reduce the size of their foreheads. There are also people who want to elongate their sideburns to make their faces smaller and while doing so get their eyebrows, beards, and etc touched up all at once.

Since they are taking the surgery, they feel like they might as well get all of these things done. To such people, this is what I tell them. Hair is the same as money. If you have a lot of money, you can buy whatever you want such as a car, a house, a bag, shoes and so on…It doesn’t matter with enough money.

However, If you buy all of these thing even though you don’t have enough money, you will suffer throughout your life. Like this, hair is like money. For those who have abundant amount of donor hair and have minor hair loss or are seeking surgery for only aesthetic purposes,

it’s okay for them to ask for more and further increase their hair density, lower their hairlines, and (additionally) advance their eyebrows, sideburns, beards, etc. However, in case of those who don’t have enough hair to be transplanted, who are suffering from severe hair loss, or who are likely to have hair loss in the future,

or for those who have severe hair loss in their families, it’s good to get hair transplant that can lead to the optimal result with the minimum amount of grafts. I’ve posted a few times on my blog about the importance of achieving the best results while extracting small amount of grafts. These days, young people use the term ‘cost-effectiveness’ a lot, right?

I think one of the surgeries that requires good cost-effectiveness is hair transplant surgery. Since we need to maximize effectiveness while minimizing investment, there are three things doctors need to consider about to achieve cost-effectiveness. The first is to figure out which part of the head patients are experiencing the most hair loss.

The hairs need to be intensively transplanted on the most important parts such as the M-shaped area or the crown area to improve the patient’s satisfaction. Secondly, I ask the patients why they’re getting this surgery. Of course, I can tell the problem just by looking over the patient’s whole head, but it’s important to ask the patient directly what areas he/she feels the most uncomfortable about.

Thirdly, doctors need to consider how to arrange thin and thick hairs taking into account the above first and second mentions. So, the doctor should pay attention to all these three things.
