He said that he heard FUT method can only transplant up to 5000 grafts And asked if it is impossible to do more than 5000 grafts with the FUT method. I’m going to talk about this today.

Generally, getting a mass transplant using the FUE method is easier than using the FUT method. Especially if you can get a two-block cut or a shaved head Or a marine cut, it will be easier to proceed using the FUE method. And we have been transplanting over 3000 grafts using non-shaven FUE in our hospital.

But non-shaven FUE is too expensive. If you don’t want to shave then it will be better to use the FUT method. But how will it be possible to do over 5000 grafts using FUT? First of all, you have to understand the concept of scalp laxity. Looking at the picture, you can see the back of the head where the safe donor area is.

It is shaped like a horse’s hoof. So, from one side of the earhole if you draw a vertical line and go across to the other side of the earhole this will be the maximum width of the extraction area. It is usually around 28cm. It also depends on the size of your head but it is around 28cm.

And next is the density in squared centimeter. If you visit a hospital, they will measure it for you. But usually it will be around 120 to 130 which goes for men or women. Then if you multiply the vertical length, horizontal length and the density You will get the number of hair follicles inside a rectangle.

Suppose that the density is 120 and take away 2cm from the width It will be 2 X 28 X 120 = 6720 grafts. This will be a rectangle. But in order to suture the wound the two ends have to be thinner just like in the picture. The density in the center of this rectangle is the lowest and as you go further away from the center the density will be lower.

So, if it’s about 2 X 28 X 120 = 6720 If you take away the outer area it will be about 5000 to 5500 grafts. This also differs depending on the density. What I am saying is that the average will be about 5000 grafts. But in the case for Korean people, the average scalp laxity is about 18mm So it will be about 1.8cm.

If you do the math, it won’t be easy to get 5000 grafts out of 1.8cm. Therefore extracting over 5000 grafts will depend on the density and the laxity. If the density is high then the width can be lower. But if the density is around 120 hair follicles you will have to have over 20mm of width to get about 5000 grafts.

And if the density is about 130~140 then the width can be approximately 1.5cm. All you have to do is multiply the vertical, horizontal and density and take away a little. In order to get 6000 grafts, there has to be about 120 grafts per centimeters squared.

And the scalp laxity has to be at least 22~23cm to get about 6000 grafts. The most I have done using the FUT method is over 8000 grafts. People with exceptionally high scalp laxity can get over 3cm. But in this case, you will have to be exact in measuring the laxity. If it goes beyond the limit

It will be a disaster. If you forcibly pull the skin The scar will bulge out or in some cases cause shock loss or the skin tissue will rot. These side effects could happen. So, accurately measuring the scalp laxity and the density will help Because the length is already fixed.

There is an equipment and other methods that measures the width of the scalp laxity. If you do this precisely, you will get the exact amount of grafts. It could prevent you from extracting too much. In other words, saying that extracting 5000 grafts using the FUT is impossible Is incorrect.

If you want over 5000 grafts using the FUT method All you have to do is to measure the exact scalp laxity and density by visiting your doctor. It’s just simple math. And if you don’t have enough laxity or density, change the method. It could be the FUE or both FUE and FUT.
