Hello, I am Doctor Jaehyun Park at Dana plastic surgery. Today I am going to talk about east Asian, mostly about Korean, Chinese and Japanese. I have listed 10 considerations and my opinion about when east Asians undergo FUE surgery. If you look at the people from middle-east Asia they have darker skin color especially those in India. Therefore, there isn’t much color contrast between skin and hair. East Asia has the brightest skin color, which makes them have the highest color contrast. Especially Koreans, they have extremely white skin with jet black hair. And it’s either straight or half-curly.

Therefore, they have a disadvantage of having high color contrast. This makes the FUE scar more visible compared to others. I will talk about the color contrast of the scar later on But this makes a distinct characteristic. Secondly, they have a lower density. Caucasians have 190~200 hair follicles Per square centimeter.

But Koreans only have 120~130 hair follicles. We have very little hair compared to others and our hair protects us from the sun and has multiple roles. But since the hair is thick the scalp is not visible. We Asians have thick hair but since it's low in density if a few falls out the scalp will be visible.

And since the skin and the hair have high color contrast, the scalp is even more visible. Therefore, even if there wasn’t much hair loss, a lot of us say that the scalp is too visible. Third characteristic is that the hair follicles are a lot deeper and thicker. So, for FUE we will have to use a bigger punch and punch much deeper in order to extract the graft.

And if we use a bigger punch that means the cut will be that much bigger. Which means the scar will be just as big. If this is the case there will be limited hair left for a second hair transplant And more damage will be made to the grafts. The fourth characteristic is that Asians have fewer grafts to extract from compared to Caucasians.

Since the hair is thick with low density, we have to use a bigger punch The amount of punch we can make is limited. And so there will be a limit to how many grafts we can extract using FUE. The fifth characteristic is that the skin of the scalp is harder. Doctor Bertram from Hong Kong called this the idiopathic occipital fibrosis. Asians have a lot more IOF than Caucasians.

The punch has to be deeper and pulled with stronger force. Which means it will be harder to perform FUE. And another problem with punching too deep is the higher possibility of damaging the grafts. The sixth characteristic is the fact that Korea is most actively performing female hairline correction surgery in the world.

We are the best in this particular field. And the idea behind this surgery started in Korea. It has developed both theoretically and technically. In western culture, female hairline correction surgery is not well established yet. Female hairline correction surgery is different in all aspects, the technique design, graft extraction, separation, transplant technique, method, angle direction.

So female hairline correction is being actively performed in South Korea. Asians have a wider face while Caucasians have a longer face. Therefore Caucasians reduce the length while Asians reduce the width Which is a big difference when undergoing operation. If I go in detail, there are huge differences technically. Because of this, we need more grafts with 1 hair follicles that are thin.

All these factors are a lot more complicated during FUE surgery And requires high-level technique with perfectly planned surgery. Seventh characteristic is that Asians want to cover up Atrichosis or Hypotrichosis overwhelmingly more than Caucasians. Nowadays, a lot of youngsters get Brazilian waxing, right? But there are still people who think of it as a shame

And this is mostly in the Asian culture. Nowadays, people spend their leisure time more often, and say if they Go to sauna after golf, people in their 50s or above if they have no pubic hair, they are worried other people might point fingers at them. Because of these cultural differences, Asians tend to get pubic hair transplant a lot more than Caucasians
