Hello, I am Doctor Jaehyun Park at Dana plastic surgery. Today I am going to talk about the pros and cons of robot hair transplant. I am proud to say that I know more about robot hair transplant than anyone. I am not performing robot hair transplant currently. And I will tell you the reasons behind why I have stopped using robots. "Robot vs Doctor"
Robot hair transplant was approved by the American FDA in 2012 or 2011. The first person ever, not including USA, to ever purchase and perform robot hair transplant is me. At that time not a lot of people purchased it in the US. Therefore, I think I play a leading role in robot hair transplant. First of all, the robot is extremely expensive.
The unit price is extremely expensive. Nowadays the price has reduced dramatically. But it still costs hundred thousands of dollars. And the creators of the robot take commission for each surgery. If not, they shut down the robot. The expenses might be a big burden.
Sure, if the results are great, we could afford the expenses. "Trends and mechanisms of robot hair transplant" Please like and subscribe to our channel I don’t say things that ordinary people would say. I only say the facts everyone wants to hear. Scientifically proven facts with all the data that backs up this information.
I will talk about the mechanisms behind robot hair transplant and the recent trends. The robot is called Altas. I am guessing there will be no other robot that will be newly introduced in the next 20 years. Why? Because when Altas was being made, they applied for a patent on every process. Therefore it will be very difficult to make a new robot. It got its FDA approval in 2012 and KFDA approval in 2013.
Not including the US, I was probably the first ever to purchase Altas and to use it during surgery. The mechanism of robot hair transplant is simply dual punch. Dual punch is simply using 2 types of punch. There is a sharp punch on the outside and in the inside is the dull punch. The sharp punch will cut through the thick skin while the dull punch
will exfoliate the skin from the inside. Since dull punch is being used, the concept is that the graft will not be cut. What it means is that the graft is extremely thin. Sharp punch is extremely sharp, just like a knife. If a sharp punch touches the graft it will be cut just like a tofu. But if a dull punch is used, the graft won’t be cut so easily.
If I say one example, it would be like a plastic cake knife. The knife they give you to cut the cake. If you use that to cut something It doesn’t really cut it right? So the robot uses these two types of punch. The cake knife cannot punch through the epidermis. Put it simply, the sharp knife cuts the outside while the cake knife cuts the inside.
This is the concept that you should understand. Therefore, sharp and dull Since it uses two punches it is called the dual punch. This is a development of the safe punching thesis a famous doctor called Jim Harris from Colorado had published. Another important mechanism of robot hair transplant Is the algorithm. There are over 50 cameras. It chooses which hair follicle to punch.
So, the main technology is in the detection of which hair follicle to punch. This dual punch concept was a big breakthrough. But the problem with this is nowadays, doctors around the world are skeptical about using a dull punch. It’s not about sharp or dull, nowadays there is a punch that has combined this
which is more of a hybrid punch. It is shaped like a trumpet which is why it's called a trumpet punch. Blunt on the inside while sharp on the outside. I developed what is called a dumbbell punch. Hybrid punches like these are being developed nowadays Which is a lot more superior compared to other punches. Personally, I don’t like using the word hybrid.
It is called a flared punch to be exact. It is shaped like a trumpet which is why it’s called a flared punch This flared punch has put an end to the controversy of sharp and dull punch. This was going on for 15 years. The representative of the sharp punch is Forhair’s John Coleran which is a group. And the dull punch like I said earlier is James Harris. There was an argument between
these two groups for over 10 years. They were going at each other for so long But after this flared punch has been developed, their argument was over. And the group that is developing the flared punch is Sanusi Umar He is a dermatologist in LA who is also my friend. And also, Jean Devroye from Belgium who developed trumpet punch.
And also, Trivellini from Paraguay. And finally me, I made the dumbbell punch. These groups of people who made these flared punches Have ended the war between sharp and dull punch. Consequently, the dual punch method is out of date. The robot Altas cannot overcome several problems
with the dual punch mechanism that might arise during surgery. For example, when the graft is implanted at a low angle on the side of the head Or if the skin is too thick and smooth, or if the elasticity is too high. In these cases, the grafts may be damaged when it is being extracted. When I first purchased the robot Altas, at that time it was Groundbreaking, and had a bright future.
But now I think it is going out of date. It cannot get better results than a doctor. "Who should use robots for hair transplant?" Then who should be using robot hair transplant? If he/she does not have enough endurance or the skills but want to perform an FUE procedure. Or doctors who are new to this field
can use the robot even if it may be a little expensive. The results may be more consistent. But in my point of view I think that If the doctor has the right technique and skill, it is better to do it without a robot, which is just my opinion. However, the advancement in technology is just staggering.
The robots can make slits and even implant the grafts. The doctor doesn’t have to do anything, it even does the punch for you. It makes the slit, and even implants the graft. They say that everything will be done by a robot in the future. As I have used the robot, in my opinion I’m not sure if that day will come. However, the advancement in technology has always surprised us
And if they do make a robot that does everything for you I guess I will have to retire. However, I prefer to do it with my own hands; checking each graft And performing all the process. I still think my hand makes better results than the robot which is why I’m not using it anymore. The reason why I’m making good results is that the tools are getting better.
There are about 6~7 doctors who are developing their own tools and surgery equipment. As I have said earlier, Cole from America, Trivellini from Paraguay, Umar from America, Devroye from Belgium, Harris from American and finally me. These people are the leaders of the Hair transplant field and have developed the tools and equipment for over 10 years which have showed significant progress. This is part of the reason
why skilled doctors get better results than the robots. In conclusion, robot hair transplant is not perfect. But it might get better as technology advances which may start the era of robots. Next episode: Hair transplant fail. What should you do?
