[Woori Beauty TV] You may already know what a laser is, but let me briefly explain once more. A laser is a device that emits a single wavelength of light very powerfully. While regular light spreads out in multiple directions, a laser is a concentrated beam of a single wavelength that doesn’t spread far. Lasers with different wavelengths have distinct colors and energy levels,

which affect how much they’re absorbed by tissues. We use this characteristic to apply lasers effectively to our skin. To understand the lasers used in skincare, you need to know about wavelength and pulse. If we compare light to waves, wavelength is the distance of one wave cycle. A pulse refers to the moment the laser is emitted. Generally, a shorter wavelength treats more shallow layers.

With a shorter pulse, the laser emits in quick, strong bursts. Delivering the same energy quickly at once is more powerful than slowly over time. Think of it like using a sharp awl instead of a dull knife to make a single, precise impact. Because it targets specific areas with high absorption, short-pulse lasers are often used for pigmentation treatments.

When the pulse length is reduced to the picosecond range, it’s called a Pico Laser. Pico Lasers can target smaller particles like melanin more effectively than traditional nanosecond lasers, minimizing tissue damage and reducing the risk of pigmentation. This ultrashort pulse laser delivers energy quickly, minimizing heat damage to the skin, and making it effective for tattoo removal.

By adjusting the wavelength and pulse, it can even treat deeper tattoos in the dermis layer. When the laser is applied to the tattooed area, it breaks the pigment into tiny particles, which are then absorbed by immune cells. After the cells absorb the pigment, they carry it to the lymphatic system for elimination, which makes the tattoo fade. Since its invention, Pico Laser has been famous for tattoo removal.

While it’s highly effective for tattoo removal, it’s important to note that removing all tattoos can still be challenging. Various factors affect the success of tattoo removal. There’s a test sheet that considers these factors. It rates six criteria, and the total score determines the difficulty of tattoo removal. If the skin tone is dark, the tattoo is on extremities like hands or feet,

the tattoo has various colors or a large amount of ink, or if the area has significant scarring, the score will be higher. Higher scores indicate more challenging tattoo removal and may require more sessions. For removing facial freckles, the laser targets melanin cells in the upper layer of the skin, so it can be treated with a relatively lower-energy nanolaser. For tattoo removal, the ink is often deeper in the skin, so the higher-energy Pico Laser is used. Pico Laser also causes less damage to the surrounding skin tissue around the tattoo and has a lower risk of texture changes, pigmentation, or burn scars.

These days, many people get eyeliner and eyebrow tattoos. For these semi-permanent tattoos, the pigment sits closer to the surface in the epidermis or dermis. So, they do tend to fade faster than regular tattoos, but they still require multiple treatment sessions. Next time, I’ll explain semi-permanent tattoo removal in more detail. When people think of tattoo removal, pain is often their first concern.

In fact, it often hurts more than when the tattoo was done. By body part, areas like the face, neck, shoulders, hands, and groin can be more painful, especially if the pigment is deeper. Pain also varies by tattoo type, pigment type, number of sessions, and each patient’s pain tolerance. This makes it hard to give a definite answer on pain levels.

At our clinic, we offer numbing cream, local anesthesia, and sedation options to reduce pain while still ensuring effective tattoo removal. Since tattoo removal creates a wound on the skin, it’s important to prevent blisters and inflammation, and scarring can also occur. To minimize this, apply a cold compress for 2–3 days, and use the ointment prescribed by the clinic for about 7 days.

Semi-permanent tattoos and tattoos with black pigment tend to fade faster. As I mentioned, the pigment is broken down into tiny particles, which immune cells absorb and remove from the body. This cycle takes about 8 weeks. Leaving 8-week intervals between sessions minimizes skin damage and helps ensure effective tattoo removal. Today we explored tattoo removal with Pico Laser.
