Hello, we are Doctor Jin and Director Son from Flexible Doctors. Today, we are going to learn about facial contouring surgery with Dr. Jin who is a medical professional that specializes in bone plastic surgery. Dr. Jin, what do facial contouring surgery and double jaw surgery have in common? Both double jaw surgery and facial contouring surgery refer to the method of surgery that is performed on facial bones.
In order to know the correct differences, I need to briefly explain the structure of facial bones. The facial bone at the upper part is known as the upper jaw (the maxilla), and the bottom part is known as the lower jawbone (the mandible). The surgery to move the upper and lower jaws is called a double jaw transfer surgery, or double jaw surgery for short.
Conversely, the surgery to cut the lower jaw located under the cheekbone and the tip of the jaw while maintaining the position of the upper and lower jaws is called facial contouring surgery. So, you're saying that double jaw surgery only changes the structural position of the maxilla and the mandible, and that facial contouring surgery is performed to decrease the size of an overdeveloped facial bone, right, doctor?
Yes, exactly. Then, what type of people are the right candidates for double jaw surgery? Double jaw surgery is a procedure that requires moving abnormally located upper and lower jaws to a normal position, so people in need of this surgery would be those that have spatula jaw, facial asymmetry, protruding mouths, or long faces.
When we bite down, our lower teeth are usually located a bit more on the inside than our upper teeth, right? By the way, did you mean that people need double jaw surgery for abnormal cases? Yes. Such cases are often referred to as malocclusions. Ah, I see. So, is double jaw surgery more difficult than facial contouring surgery, doctor?
It's hard to say which procedure is more difficult between the two. However, I can tell you that facial contouring surgery is a relatively simple process where treatment ends when the stitches are removed seven days after the procedure.
Double jaw surgery requires additional treatment for a certain period of time after surgery, and it is necessary to tie the mouth for a certain amount of time before conducting orthodontics. So, you are saying that there is a difference in the treatment period, correct? Yes, that is true. Then finally, is it necessary to correct orthodontics when performing jaw surgery?
In many cases, orthodontics is performed in parallel with surgery. This tends to be dictated by the occlusal state before surgery. Orthodontic surgery is often required for cases of malocclusion. On the contrary, if the occlusion is relatively good before surgery, it is possible to perform the jaw surgery independently and without orthodontic surgery. I see. Thank you so much for the helpful information, doctor.
Today, we learned about double jaw surgery and facial contouring surgery. Doctor, there’s something you’d like to say before we finish, right? Yes, please subscribe to our channel! We have been the Flexible Doctors. Thank you for watching!
