I always tell the patients about that point before the surgery. It must be explained when we receive the consent form. As the swelling will be serious in the first 1-2 weeks, it will be obvious and easy for others to notice that you've had a surgery for around 1-2 weeks after the surgery.
Like the sausage-like eyes that we always talk about, as the bottom part of the line gets thicker, you may be surprised, but please don't be frightened. After 1-2 weeks, if the swelling goes down, the outcome will turn natural, so you do not have to be frightened during that time. Q I heard that plastic surgery clinics are always busy in November, what is is reason of that? As it's when the S.A.T of Korea finishes.
From that time, winter semester starts. As the winter semester break starts, there are many people coming for consultation about plastic surgery. Also, as in winter, people are always wearing a lot of clothes and scarf to keep warm, they can conceal and cover their face after the surgery with those thick clothes. And also, when it is cold, there will be fewer wounds compared with summer.
As in summer, when it is hot, people sweat a lot. I think many people choose to have plastic surgery in winter because they think that with cold wind, scarring will happen less after the plastic surgery. Today's question How to do swelling management? Q How should we do the management of swelling? (You answer first)
(Me?) (Start of a hunch game) In my opinion, ice pack is important in the beginning, and after that time will help solve it. It will be good for you to not to think in a rush way, as the time needed for the swelling to go down varies from person to person. Time will help solve it anyway. Although there are different ways of speaking, some may help and some may not, time is the most important.
Some people may tell you to use ice pack in the very beginning, and this method may help a little bit. However, other than ice pack, other methods have not been proved to be effective. Still, there are something like this. Like Placebo, wouldn't it be better to do something and feel like they are helping? I think that's kind of helpful too. Effect of Placebo.
Although pumpkins have a diuretic effect, the fact is that swelling will not go down due to the diuretic effect. It can help remove edema of the body, but it does not have much impact on getting rid the swelling of partial of the face. Q So is using ice pack the best method? In the very first beginning, it is the best for sure. Also, walk more.
As facial surgery is done, in order to let the swelling go down, it is good for you to walk more. For simple eye surgery, in order to make sure the circulation function well, even when we do the facial contouring surgery, swelling goes downward from the cheekbones, right? Similar with that, the power of gravity is larger than you thought.
3 tips of management of swelling
As the swelling will be serious in the first 1-2 weeks, it will be obvious and easy for others to notice that you've had a surgery for around 1-2 weeks after the surgery. Like the sausage-like eyes that we always talk about, as the bottom part of the line gets thicker, you may be surprised, but please don't be frightened.
I always tell them that after 1-2 weeks, if the swelling goes down, the outcome will turn natural, so they do not have to be frightened during that time. If I tell them in this way, as they will be fine, so they do not have to worry so much about it.
For a good outcome in long term, we need to have a feeling that the line seems to be a little bit high a month after the surgery, and question if the surgeon did the surgery excessively. If the double eyelids look very satisfying a month after the surgery, the line will get lower while the swelling goes down.
I always tell the patients that if they think that whether the surgeon did the line a little bit too high a month after the surgery, the long-term outcome will be good. If you are very satisfied with the outcome a month after the surgery, while the swelling goes down, the line will get lower too.
To make it easier to understand, although it is not fixed, 70-80% of the swelling usually goes down in the first 1-2 weeks, and for the rest of them to go down, it takes 1-2 months. During the time when the rest of the swelling is going down, only the patient himself will feel awkward.
For other people, the eyes just look like swollen after waking up in the morning, that's how little the degree in other people's perspective. And it gets better in the afternoon during wandering. Those periods of time are related to the remaining swelling. As in others' perspective, it does not look awkward at all, you don't need to worry that much.
Swelling period after double eyelid surgery
Q. Is it the difference between people that lead to different swelling degree of each person?Or is it because of the different eating habit? In general, I think it is because of the difference in the thickness of skin. For people whose skin is thinner, swelling tends to go down quicker, and for people whose skin is thicker, swelling tends to go down slower. That's how I feel during performing the surgery.
Isn't that the difference? There is one more thing that I always tell my patients. If we have the surgery in a non-incision buried method, there are some patients start to bleed from the moment we use the needle. While the needle goes back and forth, one eye may bleed less the other side may bleed more.
We can do nothing about it. When we perform surgery on the both sides, one side bleeds more and the other side bleeds less. For that kind of situation, the level of swelling of both sides will be different. The side which bleeds more swells more, and the side which bleeds less swells less. The difference is the reason. The reason why it bleeds is because it is a surgery that requires delicate manipulation.
Due to that difference, difference in swelling degree happens. For patients that receive similar surgery, why are their swellings different? That is due to the difference in bleeding during the surgery, whether the eyes bleed a lot or little. There are several factors, but we would say that even the swelling degree is different, the result of the surgery will not be different.
It is just a few days difference, and it is not because that the surgery went wrong or something. So think in a more easy way and don't be so worried! Last question! Is that true that compared with non-incisional buried method, incisional method causes more serious swelling? (Thinking) (Giving him a chance to explain)
That may happen. As incisional method involves more disturbance of the tissues, swelling may be more serious. However, as incisional method is a surgery that involves incision, blood tends to flow out without accumulating, I think that there is no big difference in the level of swelling. Instead, in the case of incisional method, as longer scar is left, the progress of the scar to be mature can be seen.
As the progress of the scar's recover can be seen, you may feel like ths recovery is slow. The reason is because the scar takes a month to clump up and then slowly wears off after a month. Although for swelling, it takes similar time to go down, as patients may feel it's sizzling or being pulled due to the scar, they may feel that the recovery is slower. In fact, I don't see a huge difference.
There are some areas that get bruises. So are those areas where bleeding occurred more? If you have a thin bruise under your skin, it lasts longer. It's going to subside during that period anyway, so you don't have to worry too much. Swelling does not affect the result of the surgery.
For recovery of swelling, as there is always someone recover faster than standard and someone recover slower, at last, when time passes, it will be solved anyway. So, you don't need to worry so much. Today's conclusion: Let's work hard with the ice pack? Only for the early stage! It disturbs during the period when swelling goes down. Until how long is counted as early stage? I would say it's about 3-4 days. / Me too.
But that varies depending on the surgeons' style or experience. There's something like this. Whether you use the ice pack or not, it does not affect the final result. So, no need to be insisted in using ice pack, and no need to be stressful about it. Use it if you can, if even if you don't, it would not affect the result.
