Are you in your 50s or 60s, following the same skincare routine as before, but finding your skin dry, your jawline less defined, and your under-eyes and cheeks looking hollow? Not sure where to start?
At this stage of life, if you don't distinguish skin condition from sagging and volume loss, you may not get the results you want for your money. Today, I'll explain everything,
from skincare you can do at home to dermatological treatments, and plastic surgery when needed. I'll cover what to do and in what order, all in one video. Skincare in your 50s and 60s:
this video has you covered. Hello, I'm from Jayjun Plastic Surgery. I'm Dr. Kang Hyung-joo, a plastic surgery specialist. Why, in your 50s and 60s, do your usual skincare methods stop working as well? First,
from your 50s onward, years of accumulated UV damage and collagen loss, the resulting decline in elasticity, changes in facial fat, and tissue sagging start becoming noticeable at the same time.
Second, women in particular may notice significant dryness around menopause, as well as thinner or more sensitive skin. These changes can feel quite pronounced. And third,
in your 60s, changes affect more than the skin's surface. Sagging along the jawline and neck, and around the temples, under-eyes, and front cheeks, often appear together. However, even at the same age, skin thickness, bone structure, and weight changes,
along with UV exposure and smoking, and how consistently you care for your skin, vary greatly. So age alone should not determine your treatment. Please remember that. Because these aging changes happen together, it can be hard to identify what's causing them.
Here are some common examples of that confusion. First, when the under-eye area looks dark, is it due to pigmentation, shadows caused by hollowness, or protruding fat beneath the eyes?
It can be difficult to tell them apart. Second, what causes nasolabial folds? Are they wrinkles in the skin, or are they caused by the cheeks sagging from above? Or, because of differences in the underlying tissues,
is the upper jaw area recessed? They may look similar, but the causes can differ. Third, when the jawline loses definition, is it because the skin is sagging,
because the fat is sagging, or because of the underlying bone structure? It's important to distinguish these as well. Aging involves all these changes together, which can be confusing. Is it your skin condition,
sagging, or volume loss? I will explain each of these separately. First, let's look at skin condition. There are usually four main skin concerns.
The first is tightness after washing your face, increased dryness, and makeup that doesn't sit smoothly. Second, there are pigmentation concerns such as melasma,
dark spots and age spots, as well as dullness. Third, rougher texture, more fine lines, and enlarged pores, along with redness and sensitivity. These symptoms in particular tend to become more pronounced around menopause.
Fourth, as the skin becomes thinner, even minor irritation can easily cause redness or bruising. To address these concerns, I'll explain home care and dermatological treatments,
and, beyond those, plastic surgery options as well. First, for home care, keep it simple. All you need to remember are cleanser, moisturizer,
and sunscreen. Start with a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type. Then, to prevent dryness, use moisturizer properly. And,
applying sunscreen thoroughly is very important. Here's a tip for choosing sunscreen. These days, sunscreens are generally well formulated and offer high protection ratings.
You'll see SPF 15, 30, or 50, along with PA plus signs on the label. SPF indicates protection against UVB rays. As SPF increases to 30 or 50, it means the product can block about 97% or 98%
of UVB radiation, respectively. For PA, the more plus signs there are, the greater the UVA protection. In the past, people would say it lasts a certain number of minutes. These days, rather than focusing on that,
using sunscreen with a reasonably high protection rating and reapplying every two to three hours is considered most effective. Now, let's talk about moisturizers. Retinol and retinoids are ingredients related to vitamin A. They can help improve skin texture,
pigmentation, pores, and fine lines. They have some benefits for these concerns. However, they can be significantly affected by UV light, so it's better to use them at night rather than during the day. The day after using a retinol product, make sure to be even more thorough
when applying sunscreen. Some people also use a lot of exfoliating products. Exfoliants aren't really meant for frequent use. Your skin has its own turnover cycle. So use them lightly once or twice a month. Combining them with other active products
can sometimes cause more irritation. So rather than focusing on exfoliation, it's better to prioritize moisturizing. Would it be best for the skin not to wash, and just keep applying products? You still need to wash your face.
Can't we skip washing? No, you definitely need to wash. Next are treatments available at a dermatology clinic. One of the most commonly used devices is probably LDM ultrasound. It delivers ultrasound at various wavelengths to the face,
creating vibrations and helping beneficial skincare agents penetrate. This can improve the skin barrier and replenish moisture. That's one type of skincare device we use. When people in their 50s and 60s come in,
they often have considerable facial pigmentation. For pigmentation such as melasma and dark spots, lasers that can provide results with consistent treatment include Helios and Clarity. You can think of Helios
as a laser toning device. The usual recommended schedule is once a week for at least ten sessions. That's our basic recommendation for pigmentation care. Clarity also offers additional modes, such as Genesis, hair removal,
and other functions. We select and use the appropriate modes. Milia, flat warts, age spots, and skin tags are also concerns that we tend to see more frequently with age. These can be addressed
with CO2 lasers or lasers such as Clarity. Because skin concerns can differ at each visit, using lasers flexibly can be quite helpful for your skin. Besides pigmentation,
for skin texture and hydration, some of the treatments we most commonly recommend are Rejuran and Rejuran I. Skin booster treatments tend to have high satisfaction among people in their 50s and 60s. Now, shall we move on to sagging?
Sagging starts at the scalp. The eyebrows and eyelids then become heavier, covering the eyes and making them look smaller. Sagging in the front of the cheeks can make nasolabial folds look deeper. Then there are marionette lines,
which form around the corners of the mouth. As for the jawline, as deep cheek fat descends or the area stretches, sagging can look more pronounced. People often describe their jawline as losing its shape. The neck sags as well.
So, for this sagging, what can you do at home? Even for sagging, applying sunscreen properly, keeping the skin moisturized, and avoiding major weight fluctuations are very important.
Rapid weight changes can affect skin elasticity. For example, if you are heavier and then suddenly lose a lot of weight, the fat underneath and other tissues become thinner,
but excess skin remains and sags. This can make you look as though you've aged further. On Infinite Challenge, Jung Jun-ha once lost so much weight that people joked he looked like melting candle wax. He was teased about that. That's right.
It's something that can happen when you lose weight rapidly over a short time. Recently, with weight-loss injections such as Wegovy or Mounjaro, people can lose weight over a short period. We're seeing more people concerned about the resulting sagging.
But I need to take Mounjaro or Wegovy... Is there anything I can do to manage it? Actually, with this kind of sagging, there aren't many things you can do on your own. So sagging is usually addressed with dermatological procedures
and plastic surgery. Starting with dermatological procedures, in your 50s and 60s, consider Ultherapy plus Thermage. That means combining Ultherapy and Thermage. For Ultherapy, treatment every six months at the earliest, or about once a year,
can help maintain the effect. Thermage can treat the entire face and the jawline. Similarly, Thermage every six months to a year can give good results.
The biggest difference between Ultherapy and Thermage is that one uses ultrasound and the other radiofrequency. They act at different tissue depths. Ultherapy tends to target the deeper fascial layer known as the SMAS. Thermage acts on the skin.
So Ultherapy can give more of a lifted, taut feeling, while Thermage can make the skin feel firmer and more resilient. Next are plastic surgery options. For sagging, let's work from the top down.
If the scalp, forehead, and eye area are all sagging, a forehead lift may be an option. If sagging here isn't severe, but the eyelids are heavily hooded, there's a procedure called a sub-brow lift. If the midface is sagging,
sometimes we lift only the midface. But the midface, nasolabial folds, marionette area, and jawline often sag together, so a facelift is another option. If the neck sags or develops vertical bands, a neck lift can be performed as well.
Generally, among people in their 50s and 60s, a facelift is the most common choice. A facelift lifts the face in this way. Among lifting procedures, facelifts have the highest satisfaction.
You can expect to look about ten years younger. Next is volume loss. Typical signs of volume loss include hollowing at the temples and forehead. Hollows can also develop in the upper eyelids or under the eyes. There may also be hollowness beneath the cheekbones,
making the contours look more sharply defined. There's no way to treat hollowness at home, is there? Because the hollow areas need to be filled, and you can't do that at home. So let's move on to dermatological treatments. How do we address it at a dermatology clinic?
Since hollow areas need to be filled, dermal fillers are the basic option. For people who don't want fillers, there are several alternatives. These include Juvelook, Sculptra, Re2O, and Gouri.
At Jayjun, we tend to use fillers and Re2O quite often. In plastic surgery, to restore volume to hollow areas, we perform fat grafting. In addition to adding fat,
we can reposition it, or remove it from areas where there's excess. The goal is to smooth out the uneven contours of the face. When people in their 50s and 60s visit us, they often want to address
several facial concerns. With procedures such as under-eye fat repositioning or lower blepharoplasty, which smooth the contours, or when performing a facelift, the amount of fat itself doesn't increase or decrease. So we often combine these with fat grafting or liposuction.
As you've seen, aging doesn't usually affect just one area at a time. Multiple changes often occur together. So, depending on each person's characteristics, our recommendations may differ. During a consultation at the clinic,
please ask which procedures or surgeries are right for you, listen to a full explanation, and then make your decision. No surgery is universally good, and no surgery is universally bad. There is simply the surgery that's right for you.
At Jayjun, we'll help you find it. That's all for today. See you next time, please!
