The Longest Game of Rugby Ever Among the hottest sporting events of the year was the longest rugby union match ever played. The Sandbaggers rugby club from Poole, UK set a new world record by playing a non-stop match on a beach at Branksome Dene Chine in May. The match took 34 hours and 6 seconds to complete and was played by 22 members of the rugby club. The event raised funds for MND charities and was the longest rugby union match of its kind.
There were numerous controversial penalties. Some were bizarre, such as Noa Nakaitaci being penalised for being on the outside of the scrum. Others were for being offside. Ultimately, it came down to a try to decide the contest. The winner was Noel Goldthorpe from the Blues who kicked the winning field goal after four minutes. The match was also played under official laws. It was a challenge to both teams, who had little in common.
The match took almost 30 hours to complete, which is about one-half the time required for a marathon, according to the Guinness Book of Records. The game was played at eleven on Sunday 25 August and ended at seventeen-point-one on Monday. It is expected to raise PS100,000 for two charities: School of Hard Knocks, which provides mentoring and wellbeing to vulnerable adults and children, and the Wooden Spoon charity, which uses rugby to help transform the lives of children.
The match was played under official laws, and the game was deemed a success by the Guinness Book of Records. It is believed that the previous record was held by the Bromsgrove Rugby Club. It is also believed that the match will become the longest ever rugby union match when the results are verified. The current record stands at 28 hours 23 minutes.
The match featured 545 tries, 290 conversions, and a few drop goals. It also took a team of volunteers to administer time and ice to players, as well as a team of medics and physios who administered time in cool water and sun cream.
The match was played in temperatures of up to 33degC. A number of players were yellow carded. However, the team managed to keep each other going. They were also aided by 140 volunteers who provided support to the players during the challenge. They provided water, snacks, energy drinks and sun cream. The match was also sponsored by Irwin Mitchell.
The World Record for Longest Rugby Union Match was a celebration of the sport in the run-up to the Rugby World Cup. It also helped raise awareness of two charities: School of Hard Knocks and the Wooden Spoon, and is expected to raise PS100,000 for the charities.
