At What Time Was Gandhi Shot? Known as the "Father of the Nation," Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead on January 30, 1948 in Delhi. Gandhi, a lifelong pacifist and a prominent leader in India's independence movement against the British Empire, was in New Delhi for a prayer meeting. Having spent years on hunger strike, Gandhi was weak. A tense crowd had gathered at the Birla House, where he had been staying. He was wearing a homespun sack-like dhoti. He was holding a stout wooden staff. His granddaughters Ava Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi were at his side.
In the afternoon, Mrs. R.K. Nehru visited Gandhiji and spoke to him. He gave her an autographed photograph and a message of poverty. Afterwards, he left the Birla House to attend a prayer meeting. At 5 p.m., a man fired three bullets from an automatic pistol into Gandhi. Two of the bullets pierced the 78-year-old's chest and stomach, leaving him prone on the ground.
The assassin, Nathuram Godse, was a Hindu extremist. He had previously been involved in two previous attempts to kill Gandhi. But he had broken with the RSS before the assassination. His friend, Ramsingh Apte, said he was a fanatic in his thirties. He was a tailor. He had joined the Hindu Mahasabha.
Gandhiji refused to allow security searches of his home. A crowd gathered around the Birla House and attempted to thwart the attack. But a police guard in plain clothes halted the attack.
Several thousand people had gathered to pay their respects to Gandhi. He was wearing a homespun sack-like dhoti and was leading one thousand followers to a pagoda. A security guard cordoned off the area. He spoke in English.
At about 5.40 p.m., a man wearing an Italian-made 38-calibre Biretta shot Gandhi in the chest. The bullets lodged in the stomach and groin. At that moment, Gandhi raised his hands in a Hindu greeting gesture. The man fired three more bullets at point-blank range. He died 15 minutes later.
The assassin's identity has been a matter of great controversy. There are speculations that he is a Brahmin or from Poona. However, there is no concrete evidence to confirm this. It is likely that Godse was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, which was becoming the centre of assassination attempts. He was also accused of having contact with Savarkar, who was accused of being involved in the conspiracy.
In the meantime, the Indian government had relented in order to save Gandhiji's life. A sub-inspector, Beant Singh, was on duty in the afternoon. He had been the Prime Minister's bodyguard for almost a decade. His sten-gun was fully emptied. He endeared himself to Sonia Gandhi. He was assigned the afternoon shift. He had recently returned from two-month leave in Punjab.
The Indian government had also stepped up security in Delhi and other cities. The police in plain clothes were tasked with preventing attacks on Gandhiji. They also had to be vigilant for suspicious characters. The last police line was about four kilometers away. The area was cordoned off and armed police were stationed at the entrance.
