Think of it like a balloon. When you let some air out, the surface becomes a little wrinkled. The same principle applies to your face. When the underlying bone is reduced, the skin and fat that once covered it have a little extra space, which can lead to some sagging. However, the amount of sagging varies greatly depending on your skin elasticity

and how much bone is removed. For patients who are more likely to experience noticeable sagging, combining contouring surgery with a lifting procedure can often provide better results. Inside the jawbone, there's a major nerve called the inferior alveolar nerve, which provides sensation to your lower teeth and lips.

Its location varies from person to person. If the nerve sits higher, there's generally more room to remove bone safely. If it's positioned lower, the amount of bone that can be removed becomes more limited. After surgery, temporary tingling or numbness can occur. This usually happens because the tiny surrounding nerves

have been temporarily irritated during surgery, and it's considered a normal part of the healing process. Most patients gradually recover over the course of three to six months. As long as we carefully evaluate the nerve's location with a CT scan before surgery and operate within safe limits, permanent numbness is very uncommon.

The short answer is no. The fixation plates used in facial contouring surgery are made of titanium, the same biocompatible material used in dental implants. They can safely remain in your body for a lifetime. They may show up on dental X-rays, but they won't trigger airport security scanners, so there's no need to worry.

If you still prefer to have them removed after the bone has completely healed, usually about one year later, they can be removed with a simple procedure.
