Foreign Patients Prefer Korea For Dental Treatments Thanks To "K-beauty"

Equipped with cutting-edge technology and low-cost services, Korean dental clinics are gearing up to attract foreign patients to the country.
The Korea Health Industry Development Institute estimates that the number of foreign medical tourists, which fell 9.6 percent year-on-year to 10,209 in 2021, could recover due to the pandemic.
Dentist Bae Ji-eun, who runs the Yonsei Yegam Dental Clinic near City Hall in central Seoul, said she treats many foreign tourists even on weekends.
Foreign Patients Prefer Korea for Dental Aesthetics Thanks to "K-beauty"
"Foreign medical tourists often visit our clinic for aesthetic dental treatment such as teeth whitening, laminate, veneer and bonding," Bae said in an email interview with Korea Biomedical Review.
She said that especially since Korean pop culture, called Hallyu, gained global attention, people from all over the world became more interested in Korean dental tourism thanks to "K-beauty."
The vast majority of visitors to Bae's clinic are from countries outside of Korea.
Most foreign patients at Bae's clinic are travelers seeking dental treatment during their short stay in Seoul. Therefore, he sees more foreign patients on Friday or Saturday than local patients.
$384 in Korea Versus $1,000 in the US
Korean dental care is known for its affordable prices compared to its Western counterparts.
Even if foreign medical tourists are not covered by Korea's national health insurance, dental care costs are much lower than in developed countries.
According to a dental clinic near Gwanghwamun Station in central Seoul, zirconia treatment costs about 500,000 won ($384) per foreign medical tourist. That's about $1,000 in the US.
State Of The Art Equipment, No Language Barrier
Korean dental clinics are also renowned for providing quality dental services with state-of-the-art equipment.
It has advanced equipment, including painless anesthesia machines, ultra-precise 3D CT scans, and steam sterilizers to provide accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
These advanced technologies enable foreign patients to receive service quickly within a day, and almost every dental doctor and their team are fluent in English, there are no language barriers.
