Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Oaks Dental Clinic channel. I'm here with Dr. Bay and today we're talking about something almost everyone deals with at some point, cavities. If you've ever heard your dentist say,

[music] >> you have a small cavity, but weren't quite sure what that actually means, this video is [music] for you. We're going to cover what cavities are, why they happen, how we treat them, and

most importantly, how you can avoid needing more serious treatment down the road. >> [music] >> So, what exactly is a cavity? A cavity is permanent damage to the hard outer

surface of your tooth, the enamel. [music] It happens when bacteria in your mouth produce acid that slowly eats away at that surface. At first, this looks like a tiny hole or

a small dark spot, barely noticeable. >> [music] >> But left untreated, that small spot doesn't stay small. Cavities are actually one of the most common dental issues we see here at Oaks

Dental Clinic, [music] affecting people of all ages, from kids with their first teeth to adults who've had the same fillings for years. So, how do we actually treat a cavity? At Oaks Dental Clinic, one treatment we

may recommend is a custom-made porcelain inlay or onlay. Instead of placing a large direct filling, [music] porcelain inlays and onlays are designed to restore the damaged part of the tooth

with a strong, precise, and durable restoration. Why do we prefer this option in certain cases? Large fillings can sometimes be more fragile and may crack or break under the

pressure of everyday biting and chewing. Porcelain inlays and onlays are custom-made to fit the tooth precisely, helping restore the strength and function while preserving as much of the healthy tooth structure as possible. So,

how does the process work? First, we numb the area to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Then, we carefully remove all of the decayed or damaged tooth structure [music] and clean the area thoroughly. Next, we

prepare the tooth and take a precise scan or impression to create a custom-made porcelain inlay or onlay. Once the porcelain restoration is ready, we carefully bond it to the tooth and make sure everything fits comfortably.

[music] The result is a strong, natural-looking restoration that allows you to bite and chew comfortably again. Now, here's the part that's really important. Why timing matters so much. If a cavity is left

untreated, [music] the decay doesn't just stay in one place. It keeps progressing deeper into the tooth, getting closer to the nerve. And once it reaches that point, you'll start to feel real pain and sensitivity,

especially with hot, cold, or sweet foods. At that stage, a simple restoration often isn't enough anymore. If the decay has reached the inner pulp of the tooth, you may need a root canal

instead, which is a longer, more involved procedure. [music] In more severe cases, if the tooth is too damaged to save, extraction might be the only option. This is exactly why we always recommend

treating cavities as early as possible. Catching a cavity while it's small means a simple, [music] fast restoration. Catching it late can mean a much more complex and more expensive treatment. [music]

Before we wrap up, here are a few quick tips to help prevent cavities in the first place. Brush twice a [music] day with fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily to clean between teeth where your toothbrush can't reach.

Limit sugary snacks and drinks. And most importantly, come in for regular checkups, so we can catch any early signs of decay before you even feel them. That's it for today's video on cavities.

[music] >> The takeaway here is simple. Don't wait for the pain to show up. If it's been a while since your last checkup, now's the perfect time to book one. Head over to Oaks Dental Clinic, link in

the description, and let's make sure your smile stays healthy. >> [music] >> Thanks for watching, and we'll see you in the next video. >> [music]
