Wangsimni Station Dermatology Clinic,
Are you worried about sagging skin?

Hello, this is Kang Bu-gyeong, chief director of Wangsimni Yonsei & I Dermatology Clinic.
"Doctor, I feel depressed every time I look in the mirror these days.
The worsening skin sagging is becoming really noticeable..ㅠㅠ"
When I see many patients in the clinic, I often hear stories like this. As a dermatologist, I deeply understand these concerns.
Even though we know it is a natural change that comes with age, I can empathize with how upsetting it must feel to face sagging skin again and again.
So today, I would like to share what I have studied and experienced about sagging skin while working as a dermatologist for 11 years.
In particular, I will explain step by step from the causes of sagging to management methods and various treatments that can actually help, so please focus for just 3 minutes^^

Why does skin sag?
Before looking at treatments, it is important to understand why skin sagging occurs.
The key components that maintain our skin’s elasticity are proteins called collagen and elastin. They play a role similar to the pillars of a building.
Unfortunately, research shows that collagen in our body decreases by about 1% every year starting in our mid-20s.
When ultraviolet exposure is added on top of that, collagen breakdown accelerates, which is medically called “photoaging.”
In addition, lack of moisture, loss of subcutaneous fat, and weakening of the facial muscles work together, making skin sagging even more noticeable.
Lifestyle habits also have a significant effect. Excessive sugar intake, irregular sleep, and sudden weight changes are factors that can reduce skin elasticity more quickly.

Fortunately, there are care methods we can do ourselves^^
First of all, consistent sun protection and moisturizing are essential.
In addition, adding a diet rich in collagen and getting enough antioxidant nutrients also helps.
Promoting blood circulation through proper exercise and managing facial muscles are also important.
However, sometimes these measures may not be enough. In that case, I will introduce professional lifting procedures that can be considered in the following post^^

How can skin be lifted?
Lifting procedures can be broadly divided into lifting with ultrasound, lifting with radiofrequency, and thread lifting.
Because each procedure differs in the depth of the skin it targets and its mechanism of action, it is most important to choose the appropriate procedure according to the patient’s skin condition and degree of aging.
- Ultrasound lifting
Representative procedures: Ulthera, Shurink

Ulthera
Ulthera, a representative ultrasound lifting treatment, uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to reach the SMAS layer in the deep skin layers and create a lifting effect.
Ulthera’s biggest advantage is that the depth of the treatment area can be checked in real time using ultrasound imaging.
It can deliver ultrasound energy at various depths such as 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm, and 4.5 mm, making customized treatment possible according to the skin thickness of each area.

Shurink
When ultrasound energy reaches the SMAS layer, it contracts collagen with thermal energy of about 65–75°C and stimulates new collagen production.
Because it allows a nonsurgical effect similar to physically tightening the SMAS layer in surgical lifting, many people are satisfied after the procedure.
- Radiofrequency lifting
Representative procedures: InMode, Thermage

InMode
Radiofrequency lifting is a procedure that uses RF (Radio Frequency) energy to stimulate both the dermis and the subcutaneous fat layer at the same time.
Radiofrequency energy is converted into thermal energy by resistance in the skin tissue, and in this process, collagen remodeling in the dermis and new collagen production are promoted.
In addition to its collagen remodeling effect, radiofrequency lifting can also reduce the fat layer, so you can expect improved facial contours along with lifting.
- Thread lifting

Thread lifting
Thread lifting is a procedure that achieves a physical lifting effect by inserting medical threads into the skin.
It can show relatively quick skin improvement, and as the medical threads dissolve inside the skin, they can also help with collagen production.
You may feel hesitant because it involves invasive treatment of the skin, but if it is performed under the care of an experienced medical professional, you can expect good results^^
