Minimal-Reduction Laminates
Why They’re So Important
Minimal-Reduction Laminates
Hello.
I’m Kim Tae-hyung, a dentist with over 10,000 laminate treatment cases.

As you know, most tissues in our body have amazing regenerative abilities.
Skin heals when it gets scratched, and bones can knit back together even after breaking. Even the liver can return to its original size after half of it is removed. haha
But teeth are different.
Once a tooth is damaged, it can never repair itself.
When you think about this characteristic of teeth, the irony of modern dental treatment stands out even more. ^^;

To create a beautiful smile,
do we have to shave down healthy teeth?
Is that really the right direction?
This is exactly why I spent 10 years studying only laminates.
I believed that a beautiful smile should be created by protecting natural teeth, not sacrificing them.
Today, I’d like to share what I’ve learned through my research and clinical experience over the years.
Please stay focused for just 3 minutes!
The Hidden Truth About Tooth Reduction
Minimal-Reduction Laminates
Many people think of laminates simply as a “cosmetic procedure.”
So perhaps that’s why many people do not pay much attention to how much tooth is removed.

“0.5 mm isn’t a big deal, right?”
“Isn’t about 1 mm okay?”
But once these numbers are applied to teeth, the story changes completely.
Tooth enamel, the protective layer of a tooth, is about 1.5 mm on average.
Removing 1 mm of that means losing nearly 70% of the protective layer.
The problem is that teeth that have been reduced this much can cause several issues over time.

At first, they only become sensitive to cold drinks, but gradually they begin to react even to warm food.
That’s because teeth that have lost their protective layer are exposed directly to every kind of stimulus.
More serious is nerve damage.
The more deeply a tooth is shaved, the closer it gets to the nerve, and once the nerve is damaged, there is no going back.
In the end, this can lead to a situation where a larger procedure, such as root canal treatment, is needed.

(p.s. There was even a noteworthy research result in the dental industry recently...
It said that in cases of laminates with excessive tooth reduction, the retreatment rate within 5 years is more than three times higher than in general cases.
In the end, the more tooth you remove, the more health you lose—and the more money you end up spending.)
How Can You Protect Natural Teeth?
Minimal-Reduction Laminates
To create laminates that protect natural teeth, two key elements are needed.
The first is “thin ceramic.”

An example
This is our Blanche laminate haha
I compared it with xylitol gum!
If a typical laminate is 0.5–1.0 mm thick, a laminate that preserves natural teeth must be much thinner than that.
If you want to remove as little tooth as possible while still creating a beautiful smile, the ceramic also has to be extremely thin.
But it is by no means easy.
The thinner the ceramic, the easier it is to break, and the harder it is to handle.
Without advanced skill, the ceramic can break during the procedure, or problems can arise during the bonding process.
(That’s why many dental clinics still prefer thicker ceramics. ^^)
The second is a “precise laboratory process.”

When making laminates with thin ceramic, a standard laboratory process is not enough.
Customized fabrication tailored to each patient’s tooth condition is necessary.
Everything—from color and translucency to shape—must be in perfect harmony.
Only with this kind of effort can we create a beautiful smile while preserving natural teeth.

Blanche, which I developed after 10 years of research, also began with this philosophy.
It reduces tooth reduction by using ultra-thin ceramic of 0.01 mm...
And we improve the finished quality by directly managing every step in our in-house lab, created exclusively for Blanche patients.

Of course, building a system like this is not easy.
It costs more, and it takes at least twice as much time...
But I believe that protecting patients’ healthy natural teeth is the true meaning of laminates.

Of course, our method is not the only correct answer!
However, if you are considering laminates...
- How much do they value natural teeth?
- What kind of system do they have to protect them?
Please be sure to check these two things.
This will be the most reliable standard for finding a truly “skilled” dental clinic.

Laminates are not simply a cosmetic procedure. They are an important choice that creates the smile you will carry for life.
Please look for a way to improve aesthetics while reducing the amount of tooth reduction.
That is the path to preserving a beautiful smile for a long time haha
