Self-teeth whitening?
Why it’s difficult to rely on this alone

<Source - Knowledge In>
When teeth look yellow and dull, it can be hard not to notice.
It has a bigger impact than you might think, especially when taking photos or meeting people.
That’s why the first thing many people try is self-teeth whitening.
Whitening toothpaste, whitening patches, LED whitening devices...
They’re easy to use at home and cost less too.
But there are also quite a few people who say they did not see the results they expected.
"It looks fine at first, but it fades quickly."
"Does this even work in the first place?"
In fact, self-teeth whitening has clear limitations.
The reason is that becoming whiter is not everything when it comes to beautiful teeth and a beautiful smile.
A beautiful smile changes your impression, and your impression can change your life.
But simply brightening the color of your teeth alone does not complete a "beautiful smile."
You need a smile that is natural and harmonious.
Today, let’s organize the principles and limitations of self-teeth whitening...
and also look at what alternatives there are when whitening is difficult.ㅎㅎ

- Self-teeth whitening,
why doesn’t it work?
Self-teeth whitening
How nice would it be if you could whiten your teeth easily at home without going to the dentist?
That’s why many people try self-teeth whitening...
The problem is that it is hard to see the results people expect.
The key ingredient in self-whitening products is hydrogen peroxide.
This ingredient penetrates into the teeth
and breaks down pigments as it works to brighten them...
To be effective, it has to be above a certain concentration.
But here is an important point.
In Korea, self-teeth whitening products are
classified as quasi-drugs...
so they cannot be sold if the hydrogen peroxide concentration exceeds 3%.
Whitening performed at a dental clinic can use concentrations of up to 15%.
(Years ago, concentrations up to 35% were used, but today the standard is lower for safety reasons...)

Because of this difference, self-whitening products can only have a limited effect.
The concentration gap is quite large...^^;
And while dental whitening can show rapid changes in just 1–2 sessions...
self-whitening requires repeating it for 14 days or more, 2 hours a day,
just to see a small amount of brightening.
I’m not saying self-teeth whitening has no effect at all.
But if you want it to become as bright as you hope, it takes a lot of time...
and it’s good to know that there are limitations.
And there is one more important thing here.
Even if you keep using self-teeth whitening for a long time,
there are cases where it still does not work well...
That is because the cause of the tooth discoloration itself is different,
so I’ll explain this part in a bit more detail. ^^

- Another reason self-teeth whitening
may not work
Self-teeth whitening

Many people think tooth discoloration is just a matter of surface staining...ㅎㅎ
In fact, there are two major causes of yellowing teeth.
There is extrinsic discoloration, where the tooth surface becomes stained by coffee, wine, smoking, and so on, and intrinsic discoloration, where the color inside the tooth changes.
(Did you know that tea stains teeth more easily than coffee?ㅎㅎ)
Extrinsic discoloration can be improved to some extent
with self-teeth whitening.
But...
Intrinsic discoloration is influenced by genetic factors, antibiotic use, root canal treatment, and more.
Because the color changes inside the tooth, it is difficult to get results with self-whitening. ㅠㅠ
That is why even when the same whitening product is used, some people see results while others see almost no change.
Some teeth respond well to self-teeth whitening...
but if there is no major difference no matter how much you try, it may be necessary to think about whitening in a different way.
Dental whitening uses a higher concentration of whitening agents, so even if intrinsic discoloration is present, improvement may still be possible.
If the discoloration is severe, options such as laminate veneers may be more effective than simple whitening.
There is no single "right answer" when it comes to teeth whitening.
In fact, it may be more important not only to think about making your teeth white...
but also to consider the overall harmony of a smile that suits your face.
So when should dental whitening and laminate veneers each be considered?
Let’s look into that in more detail next.

- Dental teeth whitening,
when should laminate veneers be considered?
Self-teeth whitening

If self-teeth whitening did not work...
you can consider two options: dental whitening and laminate veneers.
Dental whitening uses whitening agents at a much higher concentration than self-whitening.
Its advantage is that you can see faster results in a short period of time.
But...
you should also consider that the results do not last very long and that your teeth may feel sensitive after the procedure.
There are cases where even dental whitening is not enough.
If intrinsic discoloration is severe or the teeth do not become as bright as you want?
Laminate veneers can be a more realistic alternative than whitening.
Laminate veneers are a method of attaching ceramic to the tooth surface so that the ideal tooth color and shape can be created at the same time.
A benefit is that the whitening effect can be semi-permanent and the color does not change.
However, because there may be the burden of having to remove some of the tooth structure...
it is important to proceed in a way that minimizes tooth damage, such as no-prep laminate veneers.
It is not possible to say that one method is always better.
The choice may differ depending on whether your need is simply to become whiter,
or whether you also care about the overall harmony of your smile.

Today we looked at the effects of self-teeth whitening, dental whitening, and laminate veneers.
Teeth whitening is not just about making teeth white...
it is also a process of considering the harmony and naturalness of the entire smile.
Which method is suitable among self-teeth whitening, dental whitening, and laminate veneers can vary from person to person.
What matters most is choosing after fully understanding your dental condition and the result you want.
