This is the question I hear most often from parents who bring their children in.

I completely understand how they feel.

You worry that if you rush to start, your child might have a hard time too early...

It’s something many parents think about.

But a child’s facial bones

grow much faster than you might expect.

Even if things seem fine now, if the growth direction is off, it takes more time and effort to correct later...ㅠㅠ

That’s why when I look at a child’s face,

I sometimes think this:

"If they had come just a little earlier,

they could have improved faster without as much difficulty..."

Today, with that feeling in mind,

I’d like to talk about Frankel appliance pediatric orthodontics.

Why the start time matters

Pediatric orthodontics is not just treatment to straighten teeth.

This is a stage that changes the direction of jaw growth, facial balance, and even breathing habits.

For example, if the lower jaw is small, the chin is set back, and the child has a habit of breathing through the mouth,

if left as is, it becomes more difficult over time.

Once growth stops, the Frankel appliance alone may not be enough to solve the problem.

In particular, orthodontic treatment that guides jaw growth, like the Frankel appliance...

is applicable during the mixed dentition stage, when baby teeth are still present,

usually from around age 6 to 7 and through elementary school depending on growth.

Starting the Frankel appliance during this period becomes a golden time not only for aligning teeth...

but also for adjusting jaw position and breathing function together.

Even if the teeth do not look noticeably crooked,

if the mouth is open often,

if breathing through the mouth even though the nose is not blocked,

or if the chin looks small...?

This may be the time to check the growth direction.

2. The Frankel appliance, the power to change a child’s facial shape

For children who need early pediatric orthodontic treatment, I often recommend the Frankel appliance.

Unlike regular orthodontic appliances, it does not directly move the teeth.

Instead, it is an appliance that restores balance between the jaw bones and the surrounding muscles.

Simply put, it helps guide the jaw bones so they can grow properly.

What makes the Frankel appliance special in pediatric orthodontics is...

that it does not simply align the teeth, but functionally restores breathing habits, the jaw and facial bones, and chewing habits as well.

That is why, before straightening the teeth, it becomes much more important to first correct the direction of growth. :)

3. More important than side effects is the “timing.”

“But... won’t this be uncomfortable?”

"Will it be too much for the child?"

Parents worry a lot, don’t they?

That is a natural concern.

But from my experience, children adapt much better than expected. :)

In fact, there were many cases where they later managed it on their own.

Most importantly, the key is whether it can be used before growth stops.

The Frankel appliance is a pediatric orthodontic treatment that can be applied to children during their growth period.

If you miss the golden time, even the best appliance may lose its meaning afterward... ㅜㅜ

Whether early pediatric orthodontic treatment is truly necessary can be determined even with a simple diagnosis.

It is okay not to start treatment right away.

Just checking in which direction your child’s face is growing now...

Even checking that flow alone will be a meaningful step.

I always say that the best child is one who does not need early Frankel appliance treatment or pediatric orthodontics.

But

if a child needs it and the timing is missed...

that is such a shame.

Orthodontic treatment may not be absolutely necessary.
