Is Orthodontic Treatment Okay in Your 40s or 50s?
Is It Too Late?

Hello.
This is 블랑쉬치과의원.
A few days ago, we had a patient in their 50s come in for a consultation.
After hesitating for quite a while,
they asked this question first:
“Doctor, would it be okay for me to get orthodontic treatment now?”
In fact, when consulting with patients in their 40s and 50s,
this is a question we hear
very often. Haha.
“Is it too late to start at my age?”
“Will my teeth move properly?”
Many people are overwhelmed by these concerns first.
So today,
I will take my time to explain
the points that people considering adult orthodontic treatment
are most curious about. ^^
Before age,
look at your gums

To get straight to the point,
when determining whether orthodontic treatment is possible,
the condition of your gums and jawbone
should be checked before your age.
To move the teeth,
the jawbone supporting them
needs to be healthy enough
to provide stable support. Haha.
Therefore, being in your 40s or 50s
does not automatically make orthodontic treatment difficult.
In fact, I have personally provided orthodontic treatment
for my own parents after they turned 60. ^^
On the other hand, even if you are young,
if your gum condition is poor,
gum treatment may be needed
before orthodontic treatment.
So there is no need to give up in advance
based only on your age,
asking, “Is it okay to get orthodontic treatment
at my age?” ^^
First, check the condition of your gums and jawbone,
then determine whether orthodontic treatment is possible.
Adult orthodontic treatment
is different from treatment for children

However, with adult orthodontic treatment,
the condition of the gums needs to be examined
more carefully before starting.
If the gums have already receded
or the jawbone has decreased,
once the teeth are aligned,
the spaces between the teeth
may appear more noticeable.
This is commonly called
a black triangle.
Also, if orthodontic treatment is started right away
while the gums are inflamed,
it may place stress on the tissues
supporting the teeth.
That is why, before orthodontic treatment,
we first check the condition of the gums and jawbone,
and when necessary, begin with scaling
or gum treatment.
In adult orthodontic treatment,
it is especially important to stabilize the gum condition sufficiently
before beginning orthodontic treatment.
As you get older,
chewing function becomes more important

Patients in their 40s and 50s
often worry more about chewing function
than their appearance.
The upper and lower teeth need to fit together properly
so that you can chew food comfortably
and preserve your teeth longer. ^^
That is why we examine the molar bite
before the alignment of the front teeth.
Treatment is provided in a way that allows
the medical team that develops the treatment plan
to take responsibility for your care through to the end.
There is no need to be afraid
of tooth extraction in advance

If the protrusion is not severe,
orthodontic treatment without extraction
is also often possible. ^^;
If only the front teeth overlap slightly,
treatment may be completed with partial orthodontic treatment alone.
However, these aspects vary from person to person,
so you will only know exactly after having an examination.
“I don’t want it to be obvious that I’m having orthodontic treatment..”
There is another concern
that many people mention during consultations.
They feel uncomfortable
with their orthodontic treatment being noticeable
at work or in social gatherings.
For these patients,
we may suggest lingual orthodontics,
where the appliances are attached
to the inner surfaces of the teeth.
From the outside,
it is very difficult to tell
that someone is undergoing orthodontic treatment.
If your teeth can be aligned without extraction,
this option can also be considered sufficiently,
so please ask about it during your consultation. ^^
What happens after orthodontic treatment
is even more important
Care continues even after
the orthodontic appliances are removed.
Teeth naturally have a tendency
to return to their original positions.
Therefore, you need to wear your retainers consistently
so that the results you worked hard to achieve last for a long time.
There is no such thing
as being too old

The patient who had been hesitating
decided to undergo an examination
after the consultation.
They realized that it would not be too late
to decide on the method based on the results.
This became a rather long post. ^^;
Still, I feel relieved
to have shared what I really wanted to say. Haha.
If you are hesitating over a similar concern,
I recommend checking the condition of your gums first
with an X-ray.
You can make your decision after seeing the results;
it is absolutely not too late. ^^
Wishing you a confident smile,

Thank you.
Q. Is orthodontic treatment possible
for people in their 40s and 50s as well?
A. If the jawbone is strong,
there is no age limit.
There are also people in their 60s and 70s
who receive orthodontic treatment.
Q. Is the risk of side effects higher
if you are older?
A. Because gum elasticity may have decreased,
black triangles may be more noticeable.
We recommend that you have a gum examination
and scaling before orthodontic treatment.
Q. I do not want it to be obvious
that I am having orthodontic treatment.
Is there an option?
A. You can consider lingual orthodontics,
where appliances are attached
to the inner surfaces of the teeth.
If your teeth can be aligned without extraction,
please ask about it during your consultation.
