One of the important parts of facial side-profile contours is the shape around the mouth.
If the mouth protrudes too much or looks sunken, the side profile of the face is not attractive.
In the case of a protruding mouth that looks very prominent, it can result in an appearance that seems dissatisfied or gives a strong impression, contrary to how one feels.
There are two ways to correct a protruding mouth.
First, as a non-surgical method, after extracting teeth, orthodontic treatment is used to move the gums and teeth backward.
While this does not carry the risk of overcorrection or an unnatural result, it takes about 1.5 to 2 years.
Second, as a surgical method, after extracting teeth, the upper and lower jaw bones are cut into a brick shape, as shown in the figure below, then moved backward and fixed in place.
This surgical method should be decided carefully with proper consideration of the indications, and if overcorrection is done, the mouth can become too sunken and the nasolabial fold area may appear excessively deep, which can create a much older-looking impression.
