Chin Surgery
The side contour of the face is called the profile.
The areas that determine the side contour of the face start from the forehead, pass through the glabella to the bridge of the nose,
reach the peak at the tip of the nose,
then pass through the philtrum to the upper lip, lower lip,
and end at the chin.
In this side contour,
a condition in which the chin is positioned somewhat farther back than usual is
referred to as a receded chin.
In the side contour of the face,
the ideal position of the chin is when, if you connect the tip of the nose and the chin,
the lips lie about 3 to 5 mm behind that line.
However, in cases of protruding mouth or a receded chin,
this standard is greatly exceeded.

When the chin is positioned farther back,
it can help create an image of the face looking somewhat younger than its age,
but in some cases it can also cause the impression to seem less refined
or less defined.
Let’s now look at how a receded chin can be corrected.
A receded chin can be broadly divided into three cases according to the length of the chin bone.
1. The chin length is normal, but it faces backward
2. The chin length is short and it is recessed backward
3. The chin length is long, but it faces backward
Chin surgery can be broadly divided into two methods.
1. Implant insertion
2. Forward movement of the chin bone
1. Implant insertion
First, the relatively simple surgery of correcting a receded chin with implant insertion is a procedure in which an implant is inserted in front of the patient’s chin bone, as shown in the figure below.

In general, the surgery is performed by making an incision inside the mouth,
and it takes about 30 minutes under local anesthesia or sedation anesthesia,
with a surgery cost of about 1.5 to 2 million won.
A drawback is that if the implant is not properly fixed,
the movement of the muscles surrounding the chin area may cause the implant to shift out of position.
Also, in cases of a receded chin with a long chin length,
inserting an implant may make the chin appear excessively long and strong,
so for a receded chin with a long chin length,
surgery that shortens the chin bone length while moving it forward is much more ideal.
2. Forward movement of the chin bone
Surgery that cuts the patient’s chin bone and moves it forward is safer and more accurate when performed under general anesthesia,
and it takes about 1 hour,
with a surgery cost of about 4 million won.
Depending on the length of the chin bone,
the surgery is performed in the following ways.
When the chin bone length is normal
When the chin bone length is short

When the chin bone length is long
