When puberty begins, hormones are secreted, the sebaceous glands enlarge, and sebum is produced in large amounts,

so the pores, which are the channels for sebum secretion, become larger.

In addition, sebum production can become more active due to pregnancy, stress, weather, and other factors,

and in such cases, this can cause pores to enlarge.

Not only that, but when sebum and dead skin cells mix together and clog the pores, causing stagnation,

the skin’s respiratory function may be reduced, increasing the possibility of enlarged pores.

Then, you may be wondering what the other reason is.

In other cases, pores can enlarge due to reduced skin elasticity.

The skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue.

Beneath the epidermis, the dermis, which forms the foundation of the skin, is made up of collagen and elastin.

These two components are essential for maintaining skin elasticity.

However, as we age, collagen and elastin decrease,

and they become broken or thinner in the dermal layer.

As a result, skin elasticity declines, causing the skin to sag,

and along with that, the pores also become stretched. 

  Then, when pores become larger, do they all have the same shape and widen in the same way?

No. Pores can be divided into two types by shape.

The first is horizontal pores.

Horizontal pores can be considered in relation to the most typical reason pores widen,

the case linked to excessive sebum production.

As mentioned, excessive sebum secretion can cause pores to enlarge.

This usually happens a lot from the teens through the mid-20s.

In such cases, the pores widen in a round shape,

and this is called horizontal pores.

The second is vertical pores.

Vertical pores are a type of pore that can be considered in relation to another reason pores widen,

which is reduced skin elasticity.

As mentioned, reduced skin elasticity can cause pores to enlarge,

and the most common cause of reduced skin elasticity is aging.

Usually, signs of aging begin to appear gradually after the mid-20s.

In such cases, the pores widen in an oval shape,

and this is called vertical pores.
