Hello.
This is April 31 Plastic Surgery.
Today, I’d like to talk about
the topic of the MBTI of the nose.
What is your MBTI?
![[Nose Surgery] Does the Nose Have an MBTI Too? A Complete Analysis of Nose Types! image 2](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/1b5d9adf25/naver_blog/1999april31/assets/by_hash/21fe53c8842f8fbf02bc1f036388631786b2ede3d5781a24bd2be9211d449aa8.png)
MBTI is a test tool that classifies
personality types into 16 categories,
based on the analytical psychology of
Carl Jung, a psychiatrist and psychologist.
I came to understand the value of MBTI
in that it helped us recognize and accept
the fact that there are many different people
in the world with different tendencies from mine.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs
nose surgery, when I meet people who are considering surgery,
I come across truly a wide variety of noses.
Some people visit with a clear standard and goal
for their surgery,
but many also come in simply wanting a pretty nose
or a handsome nose.
If you understand the various nose types, just like MBTI,
I think it will help you think about what kind of nose
you truly want,
so I’d like to talk about it.
![[Nose Surgery] Does the Nose Have an MBTI Too? A Complete Analysis of Nose Types! image 3](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/1b5d9adf25/naver_blog/1999april31/assets/by_hash/e3e655033922dd4b8831a5b6eedb6b4745154244ca822930057a3fa8ba1782ed.png)
As you know, the nose is located at the center of the face,
with both eyes on the left and right,
and the forehead and philtrum above and below.
First, if we classify it histologically by its components,
we can look at the nose separately by skin,
bones, cartilage, soft tissue,
muscle, fat, and retaining ligaments.

The upper 1/3 of the nose is made up of
solid nasal bone connected to the forehead bone,
and the lower 2/3 is made up of cartilage and soft tissue,
that is, soft, elastic tissue made of flesh.
The skin covers this structure.
Also, in a macroscopic classification,
the nose can be divided into the bridge
that is visible in its overall shape
and the tip.
As you know, the bridge includes both bony
and cartilaginous portions.
In modern plastic surgery,
the fact that bridge surgery and tip surgery
are performed separately
is why this division also has important meaning.
Let’s take a closer look.
- First, in the macroscopic classification,
we can consider the shape of the bridge.
![[Nose Surgery] Does the Nose Have an MBTI Too? A Complete Analysis of Nose Types! image 6](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/1b5d9adf25/naver_blog/1999april31/assets/by_hash/dbb6ca57e2472d997834736ac62b942aeb131b46f5d09109979bd40481017558.png)
We can distinguish whether the bridge (profile) is high or low,
and whether the width of the bridge (vault) is wide
or narrow.
This can also be classified in more detail histologically,
depending on whether the bony structure is high or wide,
or whether the cartilaginous structure is high or wide.
Among people with a high bridge,
some have a hump nose in which the bridge
appears more prominent,
and among those with a low bridge,
some choose an implant to raise the bridge.
Also, for people with a wide nasal bone,
lateral osteotomy may be performed
to reduce it.
For those with an excessively narrow nasal width,
a method such as spreader grafting,
which can widen it, may be chosen.
- The second is the length of the bridge.
It can be classified into long noses and short noses.
![[Nose Surgery] Does the Nose Have an MBTI Too? A Complete Analysis of Nose Types! image 7](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/1b5d9adf25/naver_blog/1999april31/assets/by_hash/92fa419e667c8799f6f7a26f57f3940d8d209f018ff8fd5aa9060e96b8f4ebaf.png)
![[Nose Surgery] Does the Nose Have an MBTI Too? A Complete Analysis of Nose Types! image 8](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/1b5d9adf25/naver_blog/1999april31/assets/by_hash/1557ccc0135286861e46a39e14baa2f06704614da32e7eb9f3469e6854ec1334.png)
Here, the relative length of the nose in the face
is more important than the absolute value.
Also, because the sense of length changes depending
on the left-right width of the nose,
the ratio of width to height is important as well.
In particular, long and short noses have
a strong relationship with the tip.
In general, people with short noses often have
a tip that appears upturned,
and conversely, people with long noses often have
a tip that appears drooped.
When adjusting the length of the nose,
plastic surgeons use methods such as implants,
lateral osteotomy, changes in the angle of the tip,
and tip lengthening.
- The third is the angle of the tip that appeared earlier
when discussing the length of the bridge,
that is, the angle between the nose and the philtrum.
![[Nose Surgery] Does the Nose Have an MBTI Too? A Complete Analysis of Nose Types! image 9](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/1b5d9adf25/naver_blog/1999april31/assets/by_hash/7a4af9871ab39ebe467a4a80388b53e61a6a22db422ca7b255bfc1dac671dd21.png)
When the nasolabial angle is large, the nose appears upturned
and the nostrils are more exposed.
When the nasolabial angle is acute and narrow,
the tip points downward
and the nostrils are less exposed.
If the mouth is protrusive, the nose may appear upturned
even when the nasolabial angle is narrow,
and in the opposite case, the nose may appear drooped
even when the nasolabial angle is wide.
This is why a simple angle alone cannot be the
decisive factor in surgery.
A nose with an appropriately large nasolabial angle,
that is, a short, upturned-looking nose,
can be a factor that makes the face look younger,
and an appropriately narrow nasolabial angle
can be a factor that gives the face
trustworthiness and stability.
However, in extreme cases, an upturned nose
may look like a snub nose, and an extremely long nose
may look like what is commonly called a witch nose.
- The shape of the tip.

There are so many factors in this area,
but if we look at the main ones:
✔ Is the tip sharp or blunt?
✔ Are the alae wide or narrow?
✔ Is the area of the nostrils wide or narrow?
✔ When viewed from the front, is the shape of the nostrils oval,
or does it have a peak that looks drawn inward?
✔ Is the columella protruding or recessed?
These are some of the ways it can be divided.
There are more detailed histological classifications as well,
but even knowing this much means you understand
the shape of the nose as well as most plastic surgery experts.
![[Nose Surgery] Does the Nose Have an MBTI Too? A Complete Analysis of Nose Types! image 12](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/1b5d9adf25/naver_blog/1999april31/assets/by_hash/2a72df5c889f199a94222642556858c9e28f92eafd983430828c704b94702e33.png)
As I mentioned with the bridge,
the reason for this classification
is that there are various surgical methods
used to change each shape.
- Fifth, the characteristics of the skin tissue
covering the nose.
![[Nose Surgery] Does the Nose Have an MBTI Too? A Complete Analysis of Nose Types! image 13](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/1b5d9adf25/naver_blog/1999april31/assets/by_hash/d2cf436a326d41e1aea888ae7985f42428cbacad7c01af619f26269c9b6a766c.png)

✔ Is the skin tissue thick or thin?
✔ Does the skin tissue stretch smoothly,
or is it stiff and not very stretchable?
The final stage of surgery is the step of covering
the newly created internal framework or cartilage shape
with skin and suturing it.
At that stage, these skin characteristics become the final gate
that determines what kind of surgery can be done internally.
For example, if surgery is performed on the internal structure
of a patient whose skin has limited stretchability
in a direction that greatly increases and lengthens it,
the skin may not be able to cover it enough
to be sutured at the final stage.
Even if, somehow, the tension is forcibly overcome
and the area is sutured, this kind of surgery is more likely
to cause various problems during recovery.
There could be even more detailed classifications,
but to briefly summarize what we covered today:
Bridge height/width/length
Tip angle/diverse shapes
Skin thickness/elasticity
How does that sound?
There is a wider spectrum than the 16 MBTI types
within this small nose.
Where do you think your own nose fits among these?
Where do you think your friend’s, family member’s,
or favorite artist’s nose fits?
It might be fun to apply this and analyze a nose.
MBTI helps us understand what kind of person I am,
and by helping us realize that there are many different
personality types besides our own,
I think it is a good tool that can help us become bigger
people who are more accepting.
Because once we know, we can understand others,
and once we understand, we can accept them.
However, just as memes spread such as
“I is a loner, E is a social butterfly,”
or “Are you that unfeeling T?”
or “You’re a planless P?”
some people seem to interpret MBTI results
as if there were superiority or inferiority even in personality,
which is somewhat regrettable.
The same goes for the appearance of the nose.
A nose with a slight hump, like pianist Yunchan Lim
or actor Dong-won Kang,
can be sufficiently attractive and cool,
and both short noses and long noses each have their own charm.
When considering plastic surgery,
I hope you will think deeply about yourself
with a heart that loves yourself,
and become a wise and attractive person
who can decide on the truly healthy version of “me.”
A person who loves themselves
can become even more beautiful.
I’ll come back next time with another informative post.
