Today, we’ll talk about male eye plastic surgery.

Eye plastic surgery is one of the procedures many people seek, regardless of gender, to improve their impression and address concerns about their appearance.

For men, double eyelid surgery and eye correction surgery are technically the same as surgery for female patients because the surgical method and technique do not change based on anatomical structure by gender.

However, the precautions during surgery may differ depending on eyelid characteristics, such as whether the eyes are protruding or sunken, whether the skin is thick or thin, and whether the eyelid tissue is bulky. The difference also comes from the fact that the type of double eyelid or eye correction that women want and the characteristics of male patients are somewhat different.

Looking at a few differences, the first is the line.

There are men with facial shapes that suit double eyelids well, such as Won Bin, Ko Soo, Jang Dong-gun, and Cha Eun-woo, but for most men with typical East Asian facial features, high double eyelids do not suit them well and often make them look too feminine.

Most men who visit for double eyelid or eye correction surgery come to the clinic because their eyes look sleepy and they want them to look more clear and defined.

In such cases, if the line is set too high like it often is for women, it can look somewhat feminine.

So in many cases, we perform the surgery by setting the double eyelid line low, around an inner double eyelid line, and making the eyes appear more open.

The second is less downtime.

Unlike women, men usually do not wear special eye makeup, so we try to perform the surgery in a way that leaves as little swelling and scarring as possible.

Perceptions have changed a lot recently, and society has become more open to men having plastic surgery to look more handsome and beautiful. However, people still tend to be reluctant to show others that they had surgery, so many prefer the shortest possible recovery period, less swelling, and less noticeable scars.

Because of this, even when incisional surgery is clearly necessary, many patients still prefer a non-incisional method, even if there is a slight possibility that it may loosen again.

The third is that compared with female patients, the skin and eyelid tissue are thicker.

Thick skin and heavy, bulky eyelid tissue can act as resistance even after creating a double eyelid, which may cause the fold to loosen.

If there is a lot of skin overlap, many multiple folds, or if a large amount of correction is needed to achieve the eye shape the patient wants, the incisional method may be necessary.

Can the eyes be made bigger without creating a new double eyelid line?

Theoretically, it is possible, but considering the postoperative eye shape, the answer would be that it is “not recommended.”

If we divide it into a few cases,

as mentioned earlier, many male patients want eye correction rather than double eyelid surgery.

The first case is pseudoptosis, where the actual degree of eye opening is fine, but the lash line is covered by sagging skin.

In this case, eye correction may not actually be necessary, and the eyes may improve with double eyelid surgery alone. Even if there is some true drooping of the eye shape and eye correction is performed, if the sagging skin in front is not folded up and lifted, the eyes may still appear droopy.

In conclusion, for patients with pseudoptosis, a thin inner double eyelid needs to be created to achieve the desired eye shape.

Depending on the eye’s characteristics, surgery can be performed using either an incisional or non-incisional method.

The second case is when the lash line droops severely, so a large amount of eye correction is actually needed and the levator aponeurosis that opens the eyes must be shortened through an incisional procedure.

In this case, if the patient truly does not want a double eyelid, it is theoretically possible to make an incision higher on the eyelid where no double eyelid forms and shorten only the levator aponeurosis area, but the scar would stand out more and there would be little benefit from the surgery.

We recommend creating a thin inner double eyelid and performing the eye correction surgery through that line.

The third case is for a patient who already has a double eyelid and only wants to improve slight drooping of the eyes.

In this case, eye correction can be performed non-incisionally through the original double eyelid line, making it the simplest solution.
