Many people feel that they must do both, but rather than thinking of them as something you have to do,

Epicanthoplasty trims the epicanthal fold to make the inner corners of the eyes look more open.

When the epicanthal fold is angled upward at 45 degrees,

it is called an upper corner incision, and it helps smooth and brighten the front line of the double eyelid.

This surgery is needed for people whose inner eye corners are normally covered by the epicanthal fold and look cramped,

people whose eyes look small because of the shape of the inner corners,

and people whose interbrow distance appears somewhat wide.

Why does this surgery, which seems relatively simple, have so many side effects?

The first reason is cases where the exposure after surgery is too much (overcorrection).

The second is because the shape still looks cramped.

The first epicanthoplasty reconstruction surgery is a procedure that improves the unnatural and harsh impression caused when the lacrimal caruncle, the red area seen at the inner corner of the eye, is exposed beyond the ideal amount of 1/3 to 2/3.

It involves a V-Y advancement that closes the front corner of the eye.

The surgery is completed by making an incision along the epicanthoplasty scar, separating the skin so it can move freely, and then suturing it closed in a zipper-like shape.

Usually, closing about 1/3 is appropriate,

and if too much is closed, it can instead look cramped, so this should be kept in mind.

There are also cases where the amount of lacrimal caruncle exposure after epicanthoplasty is appropriate,

but the eyes still look cramped.

In such cases, mini epicanthoplasty reconstruction surgery is performed.

This surgery is AINIC’s proprietary technique, and it makes the eyes look brighter without changing the amount of lacrimal caruncle exposure.

In epicanthoplasty, an appropriate amount of lacrimal caruncle exposure is important,

but the shape of the inner corner of the eye is even more important.

Even if a lot of the lacrimal caruncle is visible, if the inner corner is round, it will naturally look cramped.

So at AINIC, we excise only part of the epicanthal fold,

so that there is no major change in lacrimal caruncle exposure, while sharpening the inner shape to make it look more open.

Excessive corner widening can cause severe lacrimal caruncle exposure,

so it requires delicate technique, and we recommend having it done at a trustworthy clinic.
