Hello. This is Inique.
In many East Asian eyes, the inner corners are covered, and
on the inside of the eye, the upper eyelid overlaps the lower part,
which often includes an epicanthal fold.
The epicanthal fold covers the lacrimal caruncle at the inner corner of the eye,
which can create a stuffy-looking impression.
If you want a clearer eye shape without the epicanthal fold,
epicanthoplasty is something you may consider.
Did you know that, depending on the desired change in impression before and after epicanthoplasty,
a variety of surgical methods can be chosen?
Inique Plastic Surgery, which specializes in eye surgery,
lets patients choose an epicanthoplasty method
based on the result they want.
Today, let’s look at two types of epicanthoplasty
and also at who each surgery is recommended for.

Inique Plastic Surgery’s epicanthoplasty procedures
are broadly divided into two types: mini epicanthoplasty,
a technique developed to compensate for the shortcomings of conventional epicanthoplasty,
and upper epicanthoplasty,
which can clearly improve a stuffy-looking eye shape.
Both procedures smooth out part of the inner corner of the eye
to make the impression look clearer before and after epicanthoplasty,
and share the common goal of opening the epicanthal fold and improving the eye shape.
The biggest difference between the two procedures is how much the impression changes.
If you want a natural result that is not obvious while still improving the eye shape,
you can choose mini epicanthoplasty.
If you want to make the front line of the double eyelid clearly more open
for a definite change in impression,
you can choose upper epicanthoplasty.
Now, let’s take a closer look at each procedure
and also at who they are recommended for.

Mini epicanthoplasty is a proprietary technique of Inique Plastic Surgery
that you cannot find at other plastic surgery clinics.
It is a surgical method that consolidates the clinic’s know-how,
based on extensive experience in eye surgery and revision surgery,
to compensate for the shortcomings of conventional epicanthoplasty.
In most cases where revision surgery is needed after standard epicanthoplasty,
the problem is that the dissection range was too wide.
If too much is dissected, the lacrimal caruncle may be excessively exposed,
which can create an unnatural impression.
Also, if the person’s original eye shape and overall balance are not considered,
the eyes may appear too close together after epicanthoplasty.
Scarring can also occur after epicanthoplasty,
which happens when the surgery is not precise and the dissection is too broad.
Compared with conventional epicanthoplasty, which carries these risks,
mini epicanthoplasty addresses the drawbacks.
Mini epicanthoplasty only dissects the area where the epicanthal fold is located,
so the amount opened is moderate rather than excessive.
Also, because the purpose is to change the angle of the inner corner of the eye
and improve the overall impression, the front part is opened only slightly,
so visible scarring is minimal.
Mini epicanthoplasty is a technique that has completed a trademark application with the Korean Intellectual Property Office,
and it is available only at Inique.

Mini epicanthoplasty can also be used for revision surgery
when someone has previously had epicanthoplasty but
did not feel much of a difference before and after,
leading to low satisfaction.
To achieve the clear eye shape that is the goal of epicanthoplasty,
it is important to appropriately control the amount of lacrimal caruncle exposure,
but the shape of the inner corner of the eye is even more important.
Even if a lot of the lacrimal caruncle is visible, if the front corner is round,
the impression may still look stuffy.
Therefore, in such cases, a procedure is needed that does not greatly change the amount of caruncle exposure
but instead sharply refines only the shape of the inner corner of the eye.
If standard epicanthoplasty is performed as a revision in this case,
there is a risk of side effects in which the lacrimal caruncle becomes severely exposed
due to excessive opening.
However, if mini epicanthoplasty is performed as a revision,
the effect can be a clear, more open eye shape
by changing only the angle of the front part,
even though the amount opened is small.

If you want a definite and distinct change in impression before and after epicanthoplasty
by creating a larger opening at the inner part of the eyelid,
the surgery can be performed through epicanthoplasty and upper epicanthoplasty
depending on the direction of the epicanthal fold.
Upper epicanthoplasty is a procedure used when the epicanthal fold is oriented upward at a 45-degree angle,
and it refines the inner corner of the eye to correct the fold.
It makes the front line of the double eyelid smoother and more open.
Upper epicanthoplasty is mainly recommended in the following cases.
When you want a clear and elongated eye shape
When the inner corner of the eye is blocked by the epicanthal fold and looks stuffy
When the shape of the inner corner makes the eyes look small
When the distance between the eyebrows appears somewhat wide
In the cases above, if you undergo upper epicanthoplasty,
you can experience a clear change before and after epicanthoplasty
through an improved, more open eye shape.
