Causes of sausage eyelids and how to improve them

So, what causes double eyelid surgery to fail?

There are many possible causes, such as the surgical team’s lack of experience, a difference in expectations caused by insufficient consultation between the patient and the doctor before surgery, technical problems during the procedure, or the patient’s health condition.

As a result, various outcomes may appear, such as sausage eyelids, eyelash turning-up, scars, and double eyelids.

Among these, however, the one that can stand out more because of its unnatural and thick line is what is called a 'sausage eyelid.'

In this case, the double eyelid line looks puffy and thick, as if it resembles a sausage, which is why it is called that.

It is also called 'pretarsal hypertrophy,' and you can think of it as a term meaning an unnatural, puffy double eyelid.

So, what causes such a thick and unnatural result?

There are two reasons. First, the skin itself is thick. In other words, the thicker the natural skin is,

the higher the chance that the double eyelid will look puffy.

Second, the double eyelid line is set too high. During the first surgery, if the line is placed too high compared with the patient’s appropriate level,

and the higher it is set,

the thicker the result can become in proportion.

This kind of sausage eyelid can be improved by using a method that lowers the line.

It can be lowered by removing skin,

or there are revision methods that can lower it without excision,

so we carry out the procedure in a way that suits each person’s condition.

first checks how much extra skin the patient has left.

For patients who have enough skin available,

we create a natural design by removing the skin between the existing high line

and the newly targeted lower line.

On the other hand, if there is not enough skin available,

we can use a 'double-line correction method' in which a new shape is designed and incised,

and the existing line is dissected and released.

This is a high-difficulty method and can only be performed when there is no extra room.

For people who have already undergone revision surgery multiple times,

a further revision is still possible regardless of the number of previous procedures.

However, the timing of surgery should take into account the interval since the previous operation,

and it is best to proceed after about 6 months.
