Thanks to its benefits of causing relatively little pain while smoothly refining facial contours, many people research it in advance and come to see us.

However, when we talk with them, we find that many are concerned about similar things.

The questions we hear most often are usually these:

1. How many Onda lifting treatments are needed?

Ulthera and Thermage are generally performed once a year using a strong energy setting, with results appearing gradually.

Onda, on the other hand, is designed to build results progressively through about three treatments at intervals of 3–4 weeks.

There is a reason for this.

Onda’s microwave energy works in two ways at the same time: contracting collagen fibers and breaking down fat cells.

This process needs time to settle safely within the skin.

Rather than delivering excessive energy all at once, accumulating it at appropriate intervals is much more effective and safe.

After completing the basic three-treatment course, light maintenance treatments every 6–12 months can help you maintain a good condition for longer.

2. How is the number of shots determined?

When researching Onda treatments, you have probably seen the term “shots” frequently.

This refers to the total amount of energy delivered to the skin.

This number determines the treatment area and intensity.

• 50,000–60,000 shots: Improvement in localized areas such as a double chin

• Around 80,000 shots: Targeting the entire central area of the face

• 100,000 shots or more: Improving elasticity and refining the contours of the overall face

However, a larger number is not necessarily better.

Because each patient has a different skin thickness and fat distribution,

it is very important how the 3 mm handpiece, for tightening the dermal layer, and the 7 mm handpiece, for fat breakdown, are combined.

If you have more facial fullness, the treatment plan should use a higher proportion of the 7 mm handpiece to refine the contours.

If you have little facial fat and are concerned about elasticity, a higher proportion of the 3 mm handpiece is needed to create a firmer tightening effect.

3. How should it be combined with Ulthera and Thermage?

Ulthera and Onda target different layers of the skin, so they can work well together depending on the condition of your skin.

• Ulthera: Targets the deepest SMAS, or fascial, layer to strongly lift deeper sagging.

• Onda: Targets the dermal and subcutaneous fat layers to improve elasticity and refine contours at the same time.

• Thermage: Stimulates the dermis overall, helping improve the elasticity and smoothness of the skin’s surface.

If sagging is your main concern, we recommend combining Ulthera to address the deeper layer with Onda to improve elasticity in the middle layer and refine the contours.

If you also want to address surface elasticity, Thermage may be added.

Of course, many people may achieve sufficient results with Onda alone, so it is best to make this decision after an evaluation.
