A person who meets countless faces, performs surgery every day, and shares in someone’s “new beginning.”

Dr. Noh Bong-il, Chief Director of Globy Plastic Surgery, draws on years of clinical experience and constant reflection

to create results that are both highly realistic and highly satisfying for patients.

Q What led you to become a plastic surgeon?

A In fact, I did not set out to specialize in plastic surgery from the beginning.

After graduating from medical school and before becoming an intern, I was not particularly interested in plastic surgery.

But at the time, all of the upperclassmen in my basketball club chose to go into plastic surgery residency,

and naturally they encouraged me to “think about plastic surgery once.”

Residency life was much harder than I had expected.

But after more than 20 years in plastic surgery, I truly believe I made the right choice.

The surgeries themselves are enjoyable, and because of the nature of plastic surgery, I can work with a wide range of procedures and patients,

which makes it a very dynamic profession and deeply rewarding.

Q What principle do you consider most important when performing surgery?

A In the end, the most important thing is “becoming more beautiful.”

But what matters more is how that “beauty” is achieved.

That is why I consider 충분한 상담 the most important part of the process.

We have to understand exactly what the patient wants to look like,

so that we can move in that direction and design the surgery accordingly.

At Globy Plastic Surgery these days, during preoperative consultations, we ask patients to bring about five photos of the image they want,

but when we look at the photos they bring, they are all slightly different.

So I think it is important to use those photos to find the direction that suits the patient best,

discuss it, persuade them when needed, and work toward a realistic compromise.

When surgery is carried out in that direction, satisfaction is also very high.

Q Which is easier to operate on: a patient who makes many requests, or a patient who says, “Just do it for me as you think best”?

A Personally, I think patients who make many requests are better.

Sometimes there are patients who say, “Please decide for me,” or “Doctor, just do whatever you want,”

but in those cases, surgery is actually more difficult.

That is because they have no clear image or direction in mind.

People who clearly know what changes they want

also tend to be more satisfied after surgery, and communication is much smoother.

In fact, I do not recommend surgery to people who say, “Just do whatever you want.”

I believe it is important for the patient to be prepared for change and to have a goal in mind,

and to approach the process through 충분한 상담.

Q What are the current plastic surgery trends among patients?

A These days, people often say, “Please make it natural,”

but at the same time, there is a strong preference for results that are noticeable.

For example, if we make the nose too natural,

patients may say, “I think it’s too low,” or “It doesn’t look like I had surgery.”

The same goes for breast surgery.

In the early 2000s, we at Globy Plastic Surgery also used breast implants of 150–180 cc, but now we may use up to 350 cc.

In particular, when it comes to rhinoplasty, many people want a “stylish yet glamorous nose.”

That means a nose that looks natural but also refined and striking,

and these days, people prefer a line where the tip is higher and more sloped than the bridge.

They want the tip lifted upward, the bridge designed naturally to match it,

and a line that is not too long.

Proportion and overall harmony are key.

Q What does a “good surgery” mean to you?

A People considering plastic surgery have a damaged body image.

Even a face that looks beautiful to others may not satisfy the person themselves.

So I believe good surgery is the process of restoring a broken body image

and helping a person regain confidence.

Some people are satisfied with one simple procedure,

while others may need several areas improved together.

In the end, what matters is finding the surgery that fits the patient perfectly,

and 충분한 상담 is an essential part of that process.

Some people feel burdened and say, “I’ve never even been to a hospital in my whole life,” but

I encourage them to come comfortably and start with a consultation.

For example, when it comes to alar reduction, I tell about half of my patients,

“That procedure is not really necessary.”

I hope people will talk enough with a specialist, avoid unnecessary surgery,

and improve only the areas that truly need it.
