Open Nasal Osteotomy: What About Scarring and Safety?
Today, we’ve prepared Part 3 of the interview on nasal osteotomy and open osteotomy at Globi Plastic Surgery Clinic.
If you are considering rhinoplasty, you may have heard of “osteotomy” at least once.
However, just hearing the word osteotomy can naturally make surgery feel burdensome, and worries about scarring and recovery tend to come first.
In this post, we would like to provide more accurate information based on a real explanation of open osteotomy and the surgical approach.

Q. If you have open osteotomy surgery, will it leave a large scar?
Director No Bong-il explained, “Open osteotomy does not mean making a wide incision.”
He said that the incision line is the same as in a general nasal osteotomy, but the dissection range is widened so that the bone can be seen more accurately.
Open osteotomy does not involve making a larger incision; rather, it widens the dissection range after the incision, so it is not a surgery that leaves a larger scar than a typical osteotomy.

He also said, “Open nasal osteotomy was not a common concept in the past,
and I myself did not initially perform surgery with wide dissection.
Through experience, I gradually expanded it, and now I have been carrying out this approach since 2009 with confidence and conviction because widening the dissection has no side effects and, in fact, results in less swelling.”
It is true that osteotomy used to be considered a relatively major operation,
but at Globi Plastic Surgery Clinic, osteotomy is now viewed as one part of the surgical process,
and surgeries that include osteotomy, when needed, are performed in a very short amount of time.
The surgery itself has become simpler, the operating time has become shorter,
and it has evolved in a direction that causes much less swelling; that is the osteotomy approach currently used at Globi.

If you are worried about osteotomy?
Director No Bong-il said that the one thing we can confidently tell those who are concerned about osteotomy is that
“it is safe.”
Because the open nasal osteotomy that he developed allows the surgeon to directly see the bone and cut it,
not only is the outcome much more predictable, but for people who feel that the degree of osteotomy after surgery at another hospital was insufficient—meaning those considering revision surgery—he said that this method is also very effective.

Director Kim Jae-in said,
“if you visit several hospitals, opinions about osteotomy often differ.”
He added, “Some hospitals say osteotomy is necessary, while others say it should not be done.
At times like this, what matters is hearing the doctor’s reason for that judgment.”
For example, if a doctor says, “osteotomy is absolutely necessary,”
and that reason seems valid, then undergoing the surgery would be the right choice.
Conversely, if another hospital says, “osteotomy is not needed,”
and that reason is sufficiently convincing,
that judgment can also be considered the right choice.

Globi Plastic Surgery Clinic tends to recommend osteotomy fairly actively.
All of the medical staff have strong confidence in osteotomy,
and they do not consider osteotomy itself to be a major operation.
So rather than fearing or avoiding it more than necessary,
they actively perform it as one method to help patients achieve the results they want.
Rather than worrying too deeply about whether osteotomy should or should not be done,
trusting the goal and the explanation may lead to a more accurate decision!
Did you enjoy learning about Globi Plastic Surgery Clinic’s own nasal osteotomy over the past three posts?
As mentioned, nasal osteotomy can no longer be considered a major operation.
