An Eyelid Surgery Guide from a Plastic Surgeon
Common questions about eyelid surgery, explained through a balance game!
Have you ever been interested in eyelid surgery at least once?
But when you actually start looking into it, terms like buried suture method, incision method, in-line, out-line…
The terminology is unfamiliar, and there are so many options that it can be hard to choose.
So what is the post prepared today by Globi Plastic Surgery Clinic?
Director Jeon Jeong-jin answers questions about eyelid surgery in a “balance game” format!
If you are currently considering eyelid surgery,
take this post as a guide to help you decide your direction!

Q1. Which surgery method do you prefer?
Buried suture VS incision
This is one of the most common questions in eyelid surgery.
However, as a doctor, the method that can provide more versatile and reliable results is the incision method.
The biggest advantages of the buried suture method are that it is simple, recovery is fast, and scars are barely left.
At the same time, it also has the drawback that skin or muscle cannot be removed, and it is difficult to correct severe ptosis.
For this reason, if the eyelid is thick or the eye shape itself needs improvement, the buried suture method alone may not be sufficient.
On the other hand, the incision method allows for skin removal, muscle correction, and ptosis correction, so it can address a wider range of cases.
Its drawbacks are concerns about swelling and scarring, but over time, most of these recover naturally.

Because the incision method is a more powerful tool than the buried suture method, Director Jeon Jeong-jin chose the incision method.
However, he added that because the advantages of the buried suture method are so clear and significant, the most important thing is finding the method that is best suited to the patient.

Q2. Which double-eyelid line is more common?
In-line VS out-line
Double-eyelid lines are broadly divided into in-line, in-out, semi-out, and out-line.
In the past, a clear and glamorous out-line was popular,
but these days the trend has shifted toward a natural and soft eye look.
Among them, in-out and semi-out lines are favored by many people because they create a natural yet defined impression,
so they are also among the lines most often sought in eyelid surgery.
Director Jeon Jeong-jin said that, for the eye structure of Asians, an in-line or in-out line is generally the best fit,
and he chose in-line over out-line!

Q3. Which surgery should be done first?
Double-eyelid surgery VS LASIK/LASEK
If you are planning both procedures, it is usually better to have double-eyelid surgery first!
This is because swelling occurs in the eyelids after double-eyelid surgery,
and that swelling can temporarily affect vision.
If LASIK/LASEK is performed first,
you need to wait at least 2 to 3 months before having double-eyelid surgery.
On the other hand, if eyelid surgery is done first, LASIK/LASEK can be performed starting 3 weeks after the surgery.
That can be another reason to consider.
If you have enough time, say more than 2 to 3 months, it may not matter which surgery you do first.
But if you do not have much time, such as during a school vacation,
we recommend proceeding in the order of double-eyelid surgery followed by LASIK.
Eyelid surgery is not simply a procedure to create a double eyelid
but one that must comprehensively consider each person’s eye structure, facial proportions, skin condition, and more.
As with the balance-game questions we looked at today with Globi Plastic Surgery Clinic,
there is really no single correct answer to eyelid surgery.
