At our clinic, there are quite a few people who come in for consultations while considering a lip lift.
When they actually sit down for a consultation, the first thing they often ask is not about the effect of the surgery, but rather, “How long is the recovery period?” or “Will there be a noticeable scar?”
That is a natural concern.
Having a procedure done at the center of the face is not an easy decision,
and since the philtrum is an area that is fully visible whenever you speak, smile, or take off a mask,
it is completely natural to feel worried first, thinking, “What if it looks obvious after surgery?”
This concern is especially strong for people who need to plan in advance when they can return to work or daily life.
So today, I would like to honestly explain how the recovery period after a lip lift actually progresses,
and how scar issues should be approached with the skin characteristics of East Asians in mind.
If you read to the end,
you will be able to establish the 기준 you need to judge things for yourself before surgery.
I’ve included key information that many people tend to overlook,
so please take a little time to read it.
How does the recovery period actually progress?
Lip Lift Recovery Period
To be honest,
among the people who come in for consultations, quite a few think of recovery time simply as “a few days.”

Lip Lift Recovery Period
But recovery after a lip lift progresses at different speeds depending on the swelling reduction, the timing of stitch removal,
and the process by which the scar settles.
Because these three things are lumped together and assumed to be over in just a few days,
it can lead to misunderstandings,
so during consultations we usually explain them in stages.
▶ Immediately after surgery ~ 3 days:
This is the period when the body begins a natural inflammatory response to heal the wound.
A feeling of pressure below the nose or stiffness around the lips is common,
and this is not abnormal; in fact, it is a normal part of recovery.
However, repeatedly opening the mouth wide during this period can create physical tension at the sutured area,
which may slow recovery.
▶ Day 5 to 7: After the stitches are removed,
the swelling visibly goes down.
Many people consider this point to mean they are “almost fully recovered,”
but in fact the tissue beneath the skin is still healing.
In particular, if sun protection is neglected during this period,
the scar area is more likely to become pigmented.
▶ Around 2 to 3 weeks: This is the stage when returning to social life becomes possible.
However, it usually takes about 3 to 6 months for scar tissue to fully mature.
During this period, consistently using scar ointment
can help reduce scarring.

No matter where you have the surgery,
if you know this process in advance,
you will be able to reduce the uncertainty after surgery much more easily.
Why is the scar issue more difficult for East Asian skin?
Lip Lift Recovery Period
When searching for lip lifts,
you often come across overseas surgery review photos
where scars are barely visible.
If you saw those and expected, “I’ll probably turn out like that too,”
there is actually one important point
that needs to be explained.

Those photos are mostly based on Western patients,
and East Asians have different skin characteristics,
so the way scars remain is different.
To explain a bit more specifically,
Western skin tends to have lower melanocyte activity, so scars after an incision are relatively lighter,
and over time they tend to blend naturally with the surrounding skin color.
In contrast, East Asians have more active melanocytes,
so when the skin is irritated or damaged,
the likelihood of pigmentation remaining in that area is much higher.
This is exactly why the same incision can leave a more noticeable scar in East Asians.
That is why, in lip lift surgery for East Asians,
where and how the incision is made has a major impact on the result.

Our clinic has long considered this issue,
and as a result, we place the incision line along the inner border of the nostril so that the scar is hidden as much as possible from the outside.
If necessary, the incision may be extended toward the alar area,
but the important thing is that we do not rely solely on skin excision.
When this is combined with a method that uses sutures from the inside to lift the orbicularis oris muscle, which is the key muscle of the philtrum,
it helps control the tension that tries to pull the sutured area apart from the inside,
preventing the scar from widening while also effectively shortening the philtrum.

I am not saying this because I want you to come to our clinic specifically.
However, if you are looking into a lip lift,
I strongly recommend checking during your consultation whether the clinic designs the incision to suit East Asian skin.
Just as important as recovery speed,
how the scar is planned is a key factor that determines the final result.
A lip lift may look like a small procedure,
but the result remains on your face for life.
That is why I believe it is important to begin by properly understanding each step of the recovery process.
I hope the information in today’s post was helpful,
whether you are deciding on surgery or preparing for a consultation.
If you have been 고민ing for a long time because your philtrum is long,
you should make a careful decision so you do not regret it later.
If you are worried because your midface is long or because of your philtrum,
please feel free to contact us anytime.
Through a consultation, we will review together whether you are a case that can be improved with a lip lift,
and which method would be suitable.
※ Depending on the individual after surgery,
side effects such as bleeding, inflammation, and hypertrophic scarring may occur,
so sufficient consultation with a specialist is necessary.
