Have you started noticing particular areas in the mirror that bother you more as you enter your 50s?
You may have noticed that the cheeks have sagged, nasolabial folds have deepened,
and your overall facial contours feel less defined.
Even though it is clearly the same face as before,
people around you may say you look tired.
So although surgery feels burdensome,
it is hard to simply leave things as they are,
and you may have considered thread lifting as an alternative.
But once you start looking into the procedure, worries come up again.
You may hear things like, “If you’re in your 50s, the sagging is already too severe for it to work,”
or “As you get older, the threads can’t hold.”
So today, I’ll explain whether those claims are true,
and what you should know before starting if you are considering thread lifting in your 50s.
If you read to the end, you can move beyond vague concerns
and take away practical criteria instead.
In your 50s, is it true that thread lifting
has no effect?
Thread lifting in your 50s
To answer first: no, that is not true.
However, there is a condition.

Thread lifting is a procedure that uses the barbs on the thread
to pull up the skin tissue.
Many people think this way:
As we age, skin elasticity decreases
and the tissue becomes loose,
so the threads can no longer hold properly.
At first glance, that may sound reasonable.
But in clinical practice, that is not always the case.

The problem is not age itself, but how the procedure is designed.
In people over 50, collagen and elastin decrease,
reducing skin elasticity,
and sagging becomes more pronounced as fat shifts downward.
Naturally, compared with people in their 30s and 40s,
the threads need to withstand greater force.
If you perform the procedure in the same way as for people in their 30s and 40s without taking this into account,
a weaker result is an inevitable outcome.
That is why, for patients in their 50s and older,
we take a different approach starting with the number of threads.
While people in their 30s and 40s often do well with around 10 threads per side,
patients in their 50s and older may need 15 to as many as 20 or more per side.
In addition, rather than simply inserting bidirectional barb threads,
a zigzag, multidirectional fixation method should be used together
so that the pulling force is not dispersed and the effect lasts longer.
One more thing to mention:
In your 50s, along with sagging, areas of facial volume loss can also appear as the fat in the face decreases.
If you perform only a lifting procedure without first identifying this condition,
the lifted areas may look unnatural
or appear hollow.

That is why Globi always checks the overall facial volume distribution before consultation.
In some cases, the diagnostic stage is even more important than the procedure itself.
This is not to say you must come to us.
However, when you receive a consultation, please make sure to check whether the clinic explains the number and method of threads differently according to your skin condition.
But there is one more point we need to address here.
Once you understand the effects and planning of thread lifting,
the next question is whether thread lifting is the right choice for your condition in the first place.
If you are in your 50s, wouldn’t a facelift be more appropriate?
Thread lifting in your 50s
As you look into thread lifting,
some of you may have thought this.
If the sagging has already progressed to some extent,
wouldn’t it be better to choose a facelift that firmly tightens things all at once?
That is not an incorrect thought.

A facelift, which directly removes and sutures loose skin,
is clearly more powerful than thread lifting
in terms of both strength of effect and duration.
We are honest about that as well.
However, after meeting many patients in their 50s over a long period of time,
what I have found is that the recovery period is just as important as the result.
Because a facelift involves incisions made in front of and behind the ears,
it takes at least two weeks and sometimes more than a month
for swelling and bruising to fully subside.
During that time, going out or maintaining social activities is not easy.
For people in their 50s who are still working,
or for those who are sensitive to how others see them,
this downtime can be a bigger hurdle than expected.

Among the patients in their 50s who come for consultations,
there are quite a few cases like this.
Their condition may be one where a facelift seems more appropriate if you look only at the result,
but because they have an important event next month
or cannot take time off from work,
they ultimately choose thread lifting.
Fortunately, there are also cases where well-designed thread lifting suited to the condition
leads to satisfying results.

These days, with the advancement of molding thread technology,
the satisfaction level can come close to the results of a facelift,
which is also something we see in clinical practice.
Of course, if skin sagging is very severe,
thread lifting alone has its limits,
and in such cases, recommending a facelift honestly is the right approach.
In the end, the question is not which one is better,
but which method is realistically suitable for your current condition and situation.
I recommend getting a consultation at a place that compares both options
and explains them clearly.
Facial changes in your 50s are not simply due to age.
And the way to address those changes
does not need to be abandoned just because of age.
However, I hope this article helped convey at least a little that
you should not approach it in the same way as you would in your 20s or 30s.
Before any procedure, Globi spends the most time understanding the patient’s condition.
That is because we believe the first step is to determine
which method is best suited to the person in front of us right now.
If you have any questions,
please feel free to leave an inquiry for consultation.
