For those considering a lip lift,
the biggest concern is often the scar.
The worry of, “I heard the results are good,
but what if a scar is left behind?”
often ends up delaying the decision.
In fact, this concern is entirely understandable,
and it is a medically grounded one.
As a matter of fact, compared with Western patients,
East Asian patients tend to have more noticeable scars,
and the area around the philtrum is especially active,
so there are things to pay attention to during recovery.
That is why today, I would like to honestly share the story
I most wanted to tell those who come to the consultation room
with concerns about scarring.
Please give me 3 minutes.
Why do scars form more easily in East Asian patients?
Lip lift scars
"Doctor, when I look at overseas reviews, there are almost no scars.
Can I expect the same?"
Whenever I get this question, I answer honestly.
It is difficult to simply compare results based on overseas, especially Western, standards
with the results in East Asian patients.

And this is not a difference in technique,
but an issue stemming from the skin structure itself.
From a dermatological perspective, East Asian skin
tends to have a thicker dermis,
and it also contains abundant melanin pigment.
When these two factors overlap,
during the wound-healing process, there is a higher tendency
for hyperpigmentation to occur or for scar tissue to form
more prominently than in Western patients.
On top of that, there is the nature of the philtrum area.
The area around the philtrum is where speaking, smiling, and chewing
are repeated countless times throughout the day.
Even while the wound is healing, the muscles keep moving,
so continuous tension is inevitably placed on the sutured area.
How this "tension" is controlled
is the key factor in determining the size of the scar.
Simply put, even if the surgery is the same,
this is why the philtrum is a particularly important area
when it comes to scar management.
To minimize the effect of tension and conceal the scar,
the most important core factor is ultimately the location of the incision line.
The conventional method of making an incision under the nose or directly along the lip line
is clearly effective in terms of results.
However, because the incision line is exposed externally,
even after healing, scars can remain noticeable
in East Asian skin.
To minimize the burden of scar exposure,
recent lip lift surgery has evolved toward preserving the effect
while hiding the incision line as much as possible.
A representative method is to make the incision inside the nostril
and secure the tissue internally with sutures.
With this approach, the scar is placed inside the nose,
so it is hardly visible from the outside,
while still achieving the effect of lifting the philtrum.
Four weeks after surgery,
this period determines the quality of the scar

Even if the surgical method is well designed,
if postoperative care does not follow,
the outcome can be different.
In fact, if this part is not explained sufficiently during consultation,
it can later lead to disappointing results.
The first thing to be careful about after surgery
is not touching the wound area.

You may wash your face starting the next day,
but for the surgical area, please manage it only so that water
lightly touches the site, and vigorous rubbing while washing your face
is only possible after day 7, when the stitches are removed.
After the stitches are removed, applying scar ointment consistently
to the external incision area
will help recovery.
However, many people unexpectedly miss one point.

That is ultraviolet rays.
The wound area after surgery
is extremely sensitive to ultraviolet rays.
If exposed to UV during this period,
hyperpigmentation can occur and the scar may appear darker.
For about two months, please use sunscreen when going out,
and be careful to ensure that the surgical area is not directly exposed
to strong sunlight.
This can help scar recovery.
Those who know in advance and manage it properly
tend to have a better recovery course than those who do not.

Lastly, there is one more thing I would like to share.
A lip lift is not a surgery that is applied in the same way to everyone.
Because the length of the philtrum, skin condition, and oral structure
affect the range of improvement possible,
a consultation to first check your own case
is absolutely necessary.
This is exactly why, at Globi,
we believe consultation comes before surgery.
If you have been hesitating to get a lip lift because of scar concerns,
I hope today’s post has conveyed, at least a little, that the two factors
that can significantly reduce worries about scarring are
the location of the incision line and postoperative care.
The first step is to check whether surgery is suitable for your case
and which method is appropriate.
Reducing trial and error caused by incorrect information
and confirming an accurate plan—
that is why Globi recommends consultation.
※ Caution: After surgery, depending on the individual, side effects such as bleeding,
inflammation, and infection may occur,
and the degree of scar recovery may vary depending on each person’s constitution.
Please make your decision after thorough consultation with a specialist.
