The difference in surgical methods makes all the difference

Plastic surgery is most important when the basics are followed. Plastic surgery should be designed with your entire lifetime in mind. Both the process and the results of plastic surgery must be safe. Globi always puts the customer first.
Consultation is an important step that leads to surgery. To help you be satisfied with the results, we promise personalized consultation with medical staff who have extensive clinical experience.
Aftercare can be considered an extension of surgery. To help our patients recover quickly, we provide customized care programs.
When consulting with people considering philtrum reduction surgery,
the first thing they often say is this.
I’m more worried about the scar than the surgical result.
What if it stands out in the middle of my face?
I completely understand this concern.
But there is one point I want to address first.
A scar is not determined solely by post-surgery care.
Depending on how the surgery is designed from the start,
the extent of scarring can differ greatly.
Today, I’ll explain why the surgical method affects scarring,
and which design is appropriate for which case.
Why scarring differs depending on the surgical method

If you make an incision,
doesn’t a scar always remain?
This is the first question many people have
when they begin looking into philtrum reduction surgery.
To answer directly,
the incision itself is not the problem.
Where and how the incision is made,
and where the trace is left,
is what creates the difference in scarring.
A method that has commonly been used in the past
was to directly incise the skin under the nose or above the lip line
to reduce the skin.
The effect can be clear,
but the limitation was that the incision line remained visible externally.
At this point, I want to highlight an important feature of Asian skin.
Caucasian skin has stronger regenerative ability,
so scars tend to appear relatively faint.
But Asian skin is different.
That is because there is a relatively higher possibility of prominent scars or pigmentation.
In fact, most medical textbooks and overseas papers we encounter
are written based on Caucasian populations.
If surgery is performed without considering these characteristics,
you should know that a scar may remain far more visible than expected.

For this reason, the recent trend has been shifting toward an approach that hides the incision line inside the nostrils for Asian patients,
and we also design surgery in this direction.
The incision line is designed inside the nostrils,
and if necessary, it can be naturally extended to the boundary of the alar rim.
In this way, when viewed from the outside,
the incision mark is concealed in the shadowed area inside the nose,
making it less noticeable.
Ultimately, the key to scarring lies more in the surgical design than in aftercare.
So if you want to reduce concerns about scarring,
please remember that choosing the surgical method comes before post-operative care.
Then, who is this surgery actually suitable for,
and who is it not suitable for?
Then how should the surgical design
be changed?

If the incision is made inside the nostrils,
will the effect still be sufficient?
I understand the concern that changing the incision location
might reduce the result.
To answer directly,
changing the location does not reduce the effect,
and if performed precisely according to each person’s tissue condition,
sufficient improvement can be expected.

This method does not end simply with hiding the incision line.
At the same time as removing skin, it also applies a method of firmly securing the inner muscle layer of the philtrum from within.
Because the structure fixes the internal tissue itself rather than merely pulling the skin from the outside,
you can expect a sufficient philtrum-shortening effect while reducing visible traces.
During recovery,
there is one thing I want to be sure to mention.
Usually, swelling peaks on the third day after surgery,
then gradually subsides afterward,
and stitches are removed on the seventh day.

Until then, you should avoid touching the inside of the nose or sniffing forcefully.
If inflammation occurs, recovery may actually slow down,
and the scar may become more noticeable.
However, to be honest,
this surgery is not suitable for everyone.
If the reason the philtrum looks long is not the skin length but rather the dental arch structure or oral structure,
it is difficult to expect this surgery alone to provide a fundamental solution.
For such patients, we first explain the limitations of the surgery,
and then consider other directions together.

If you are also considering nose surgery,
it may be worth reviewing the option of combining the two procedures.
When the nasal tip is raised,
the philtrum often appears relatively longer,
and if both are performed through the same incision line,
you can expect a more natural structural result as well.
Concerns about philtrum reduction surgery scars
are not only a matter of post-operative care.
It is more important to first check where the incision line will be placed,
and to receive a diagnosis of whether you are a suitable candidate for surgery.
Globi Plastic Surgery Clinic follows the principle of transparently disclosing
the side effects and precautions that may occur after surgery.
It is not too late to make your decision after first checking
whether the surgery is appropriate for your case
and which direction suits your condition.
