There is something people considering breast fat grafting
say most often in the consultation room.
I heard that it is possible to go up by about one cup size.
Is that possible for me too?
There is a reason this question comes up so often.
The phrase “half a cup to one cup”
appears frequently in search results,
but many people are unsure whether
it applies to them in the same way.
To be honest,
that range does not apply
equally to everyone.
The change in size after fat grafting
depends not simply on the amount of fat grafted,
but on a combination of body type,
surgical planning, and the fat survival rate.
In this article, I will explain honestly
the realistic range of size changes
and the factors that determine the outcome.
First, you need to check whether “half a cup to one cup”
applies to you as well

I was told that fat grafting could
increase my size by one cup,
but I do not have much body fat.
Is it still possible?
This question also comes up very often.
In fact, most people who ask it
already have a suspicion that is close to the answer.
That is correct.
If you have a slender body type with little fat,
that figure may not apply in the same way.
Let us first look at how the range
of half a cup to one cup is determined.
Medically, increasing by “one cup size”
requires increasing the difference between
the upper-bust and under-bust circumferences
by approximately 2.5 cm.
However, considering that only around 50% of grafted fat
survives—the fat survival rate—
more than twice that amount of fat
must be secured at the time of injection
to ultimately see a one-cup change.
In the end, the starting point for a change in size
is how much fat can be grafted.

The problem is that people with slender body types
have less raw material available for extraction.
Once fat is harvested from the thighs or abdomen
and impurities are filtered out,
the actual amount of “pure fat” available for use
is reduced by half.
For people who have little body fat to begin with,
this absolute amount may be insufficient
to achieve the desired volume.
If the procedure is pushed too far in such cases,
some of the grafted fat may fail to establish properly,
which can lead to situations such as necrosis or calcification.
For this reason, when the amount of fat that can be harvested
is judged to be significantly insufficient,
we tend to recommend implant surgery before fat grafting.
Rather than proceeding unconditionally in the direction you want,
we believe that first confirming the range
that is realistically possible for your body type
is a way to reduce disappointment with the results.
There is a reason the size
looks different at different times after surgery

If your body type is suitable and you undergo surgery,
the next thing to understand is how the size
changes over time after the procedure.
It has been about a week since surgery,
and my breasts look much larger than I expected.
Will they stay this way?
Whenever I receive this question,
there is something I would honestly like to say first.
The size you see now is highly unlikely
to be the final result.
I hesitate to say this when expectations
are at their highest,
but knowing this in advance
can help you avoid unnecessary concern later.

From immediately after surgery through the first week,
swelling in the grafted area makes the volume
appear greater.
Until about one month after surgery,
the swelling subsides and the volume
will inevitably decrease noticeably.
If you are unaware of this process,
you may naturally become anxious,
wondering, “What if all the fat disappears?”
However, this is part of the normal recovery process,
so there is no need to worry too much.
The final size can be assessed accurately
after three months, once the graft has stabilized.

There was a case like this in practice.
One patient contacted us around one month after surgery,
worried and saying, “It seems much smaller than it was at first.”
When she visited us three months later,
the upper-breast contour had naturally taken shape,
and she was very satisfied.
Many people misunderstand the reduction in swelling
at the one-month point as meaning that
“the procedure did not work.”
That is why Globie makes sure
that patients fully understand the recovery process
before surgery.
Once the graft has stabilized after three months,
the transplanted fat becomes established as part of your body.
After that, it also responds to changes in body weight:
if your weight increases, the volume in the grafted area
may increase as well,
and if your weight decreases significantly,
it may decrease along with it.

Knowing this in advance can also help you
plan how to manage your weight after surgery.
If the volume still falls short of your expectations
at this point, a second grafting procedure
may be considered.
However, rushing before the first graft has stabilized sufficiently
can affect the outcome, so it is generally recommended
to use at least three months after the first procedure
as the reference point.
The change in size after breast fat grafting
is not determined by the surgery alone.
It is the result of body type,
grafting design, and the recovery process working together.
At Globie, our principle in consultations
is to explain possible limitations
and realistic ranges transparently from the start.
The first step is to determine:
“What degree of size change can I realistically expect
with my body type?”
and
“Is fat grafting the right option for me,
or should I consider other options first?”
