This is a question we hear quite often in the consultation room.

To give you the conclusion first, it is half true and half false.

This is because not all of the grafted volume survives, but how much survives varies greatly depending on how it is injected.

For the transplanted cells to survive in their new location, they must receive blood and nutrients from the surrounding tissue.

This process is called fat survival, and it is similar to transplanting a new plant into a flowerpot: the plant can survive only when its roots take firm hold in the new soil and absorb nutrients.

The problem is that it takes time for new blood vessels to grow.

During that time, fat cells that do not receive nutrients simply disappear.

When a large amount is concentrated in one area, the outer cells may survive while the inner cells fail to receive blood and become necrotic.

That is precisely why this happens.

The reason studies report a wide range of fat survival rates, from 15% to 75%, is that differences in this vascular environment determine the outcome.

It takes approximately two to three months for the transplanted cells to fully settle, and lifestyle habits during this period substantially determine how long the results last.

When we say that the surgery went well, it means that we created a favorable environment; it does not mean that everything afterward will resolve automatically.

The first factor that can actually reduce the fat survival rate is dieting immediately after surgery.

We occasionally see patients imposing severe dietary restrictions or dieting during the recovery period after surgery.

While the grafted cells are settling, they need to draw nutrients from the surrounding tissue. If the supply is insufficient, even cells that could have survived may simply disappear.

It is not too late to begin dieting after three months, when fat survival has become fully stabilized.

The second factor is smoking.

Because nicotine constricts peripheral blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the grafted area, you should avoid smoking environments altogether, including secondhand smoke, for one month before and after surgery.

You should also avoid massaging the grafted area or applying heat for two months after surgery, because external stimulation can disturb the environment of cells that have not yet settled.

During this period, leaving the area undisturbed is the best form of care.
