After completing double eyelid surgery, many people
come to us around a similar time with the same question:
When can I start wearing eye makeup?
As the swelling begins to subside,
we fully understand the desire to return to your daily routine.
However, many people may not realize in advance
that the answer to this question
depends on the surgical method.
Since starting eye makeup at the wrong time can interfere with recovery
and affect scarring,
today we will take a detailed look at this issue.
The Timing Depends on the Surgical Method

I had my stitches removed,
so doesn’t that mean I can wear makeup now?
Many people assume that removing the stitches means
they have been cleared to wear makeup, but this is where misunderstandings often arise.
With the buried-suture method, stitches may not need to be removed and recovery is generally faster,
so eye makeup is usually possible around three days after surgery.

In contrast, the standard is different for the incisional method.
Even after the stitches are removed, the sutured incision
is not immediately in a stable condition.
We meet quite a few people in the consultation room
who began wearing makeup too early without knowing this
and later returned because of scarring concerns.

If repeated friction is applied to the incision during cleansing,
the tissue that has not yet healed can become irritated,
which may lead to scarring that becomes thicker than expected or separates.
With the incisional method, stitches are usually removed
on postoperative day 7, and light eye makeup is recommended
starting about two weeks after surgery—one week after stitch removal.

If you also underwent an eye-opening procedure involving the conjunctiva,
such as lateral canthoplasty or lower canthoplasty,
the timing is different again.
The conjunctival tissue below the eye tends to recover
more slowly than the tissue above,
so it is safer to delay starting makeup until at least three weeks after surgery.
One additional point: if you are prone to keloids
or tend to have active sebum production,
you need to pay closer attention to scar care
even when undergoing the same surgical method.
If these conditions apply to you,
you should discuss and determine both when to start wearing makeup
and which products to use
with your surgeon separately.
Once You Start Wearing Makeup,
How You Remove It Is Even More Important

How you remove makeup is just as important
as when you start wearing it.
In practice, many people carefully ask about the starting date,
but move on without separately checking
how to cleanse the area.
The area around the incision remains sensitive
to external irritation for several months after surgery,
and repeated friction during this period is one of the most common factors
that interferes with the process of scar maturation.

When cleansing, soak a cotton swab or soft pad
with cleansing oil and gently wipe in a direction parallel to the incision.
You may think, “Isn’t it enough to be gentle?”
but the direction is more important than the amount of force.
Repeatedly rubbing across the incision
can place continuous tension on the healing tissue,
even if you are not wiping forcefully.

For up to three weeks after surgery, avoid using products that adhere closely to the incision,
such as eyeliner and mascara, as much as possible,
and it is especially advisable to avoid waterproof formulas.
The removal process naturally tends to require more force,
which can easily result in accumulated irritation to the incision.
Eyelash extensions and semi-permanent makeup
are recommended starting four weeks after surgery.
Irritation can accumulate around the incision
during the maintenance and removal processes afterward,
not just during the procedure itself.
Therefore, allowing sufficient time before undergoing these procedures
is beneficial for preserving the results.

It can take up to six months for a scar to settle naturally,
so care during the first two to three months of recovery
plays a greater role than expected in determining the final appearance.
Not Rushing Is the Fastest Way to Recover
We fully understand the desire to start wearing eye makeup quickly after surgery,
but starting even a little too early
can actually prolong the recovery period.
Taking into account the surgical method and your individual skin condition,
it is important to follow the appropriate timing for starting makeup
as well as the proper care methods after applying makeup
in order to fully protect the results.
