Hello, this is Director Park Seong-hyeok of Nuneopyo Plastic Surgery.
I saw an article online about broadcaster Cho Young-gu’s plastic surgery.
In fact, I think what matters in plastic surgery is the change in one’s impression...
I believe the goal of surgery should be to set the direction toward
a natural impression and a more comfortable impression
.
Simply asking for double eyelids or asking to cut away sagging skin... requests like these can, in some cases,
lead to a stronger-looking impression.
What kind of eye surgery helps avoid a strong impression?
At Nuneopyo Plastic Surgery, we have extensive experience with middle-age eye surgery, to the point that we analyzed 518 patients over 1.5 years and published the results in an SCI paper.
There are also several types of middle-age eye surgery (upper blepharoplasty, under-brow lift, forehead lift),
and we are not focused on just one procedure.
Because we can present multiple options, with good results,
we can offer many choices to those who are worried about looking too intense.
Among them, an endoscopic forehead lift is
a very powerful procedure that improves a strong impression with just one surgery, while also producing natural-looking results.
As shown in the case above, a forehead lift is possible even with hair loss,
and the scar from the incision becomes less noticeable over time as well.
So why is Cho Young-gu said to have looked
scarier after plastic surgery?
Why does upper blepharoplasty make the impression stronger?
Upper blepharoplasty or an under-brow lift
reduces the distance between the eyebrows and the eyes after surgery..
It is not because the skin is cut away, but because in most middle-aged people, the forehead is used to open the eyes.
And when the eye-eyebrow distance becomes narrower,
the impression is said to have become “stronger” or “more fierce.”
Huh? So when the eyebrows go down, the impression gets stronger?
If you’re wondering about that, please look at the illustration below.

Relationship between eyebrows and impression. 2001 Knize
This illustration is part of a textbook I like....
I think it very intuitively shows how eyebrows affect a first impression.
When drawing an angry expression, we often draw the eyebrows and eyes close together, right?
Now it should make sense why lowered eyebrows can make a person look more intense^^
Would you like to see it once more with a real example?

Before surgery
This is a patient of mine who habitually uses the forehead to open the eyes.

After surgery
And after surgery, the sagging was greatly improved... but the impression became stronger ㅠㅠ
In the case above, the reason the eyebrow-eye distance became narrower after surgery is
that after surgery,
the sagging skin has been corrected,
so there is no longer a need to use the forehead to open the eyes.
Of course, there are also cases in which upper blepharoplasty that removes skin does not make the distance between the eyebrows and eyes narrower.

Before upper blepharoplasty
Can you see the difference in the preoperative appearance of the two cases above? ^^;;

After upper blepharoplasty
The person above is what they looked like after upper blepharoplasty.
Even though the same skin-cutting surgery was performed, the eyebrows did not drop after surgery.
Of course, there are people who do not mind the change of having the eyebrows and eyes become closer.
In particular, for men, a somewhat stronger impression is often more helpful.
But personally, like the under-brow lift case above,
a change that makes the impression stronger
is not, in my view, a desirable change when judged from a higher level of perspective.
If you are an eye surgery specialist with a lot of experience, even if the brows and eyes look far apart before surgery when the eyes are open,
you should be able to distinguish between eyes that maintain that distance after surgery and those that do not^^
Cases where it becomes uncomfortable to open the eyes after Botox
Have you heard people say that Botox makes it uncomfortable to open the eyes? That it makes the impression worse?
This works by the same principle as the examples above.

Before and after forehead Botox
This patient was concerned about forehead and glabella wrinkles,
and was very satisfied after getting Botox.
As you can see in the photo below, when making an expression, the difference in wrinkles is clearly noticeable, right?
But if you look at the eyes... as a plastic surgeon, I still find it quite disappointing.
Conclusion
Of course, the article above was probably edited to include only provocative content in order to attract attention.
Broadcaster Cho Young-gu also seemed satisfied with the surgical results,
separate from the comments used on television.
Therefore, it is true that it is somewhat cautious for others to judge the results of surgery.
Even I, as the one writing this, worry that I may be going too far.
Plastic surgery is about self-satisfaction!
But.
The truth is that there are not many people in Korea with a strong personal viewpoint,
and because it is a culture that is highly conscious of how others see them...
even if a person was initially satisfied,
if those around them evaluate the results negatively,
many people end up worrying about the surgical outcome as time goes by.
As experience with surgery accumulates,
I feel that I gain know-how that allows me to give more varied advice to clients about their requests.
