Hello.
Wonjin Dental Clinic
I am Park Jae-hyung, Chief Director.

Wonjin Dental Clinic
Even after whitening, the color of my front teeth does not become evenly bright,
so I keep worrying about it every time I smile.
Wonjin Dental Clinic
Do you unconsciously cover your mouth every time you smile?
Because of the color or shape of your front teeth,
when taking photos,
and even when smiling during conversation, it may have been a subtle source of stress.
Recently, more and more people have been searching for Breenite (no-prep laminate)
in order to solve these concerns.

This image is provided to help explain the process. ^^
Today, for those considering Breenite,
I will organize the key points you should know so that
you can judge for yourself whether this treatment is
a suitable choice.
If you focus for just 3 minutes,
it will be enough help to organize your criteria before consultation.
1. Causes of tooth discoloration 2. What is the no-prep Breenite method? 3. Problems and side effects of Breenite
First, let’s check the causes of discoloration
Wonjin Dental Clinic
Before considering Breenite,
it is important to know the cause of the discoloration.

Causes of tooth discoloration
Extrinsic discoloration occurs when pigments from coffee, wine, smoking, and similar sources are deposited on the tooth surface.
It may improve to some extent with scaling or whitening,
but if you want to refine both color and shape,
you may want to consider Breenite (no-prep laminate).
Intrinsic discoloration occurs when the inside of a tooth darkens after root canal treatment,
when discoloration develops due to antibiotic use during childhood,
or when the nerve is damaged by trauma.
In such cases, whitening alone may have limitations,
so many people consider Breenite (no-prep laminate).

Breenite: What exactly is this treatment?
Wonjin Dental Clinic
Breenite (no-prep laminate)
is a treatment that improves color and shape by attaching a thin prosthetic restoration to the front surface of the tooth.
You may be wondering,
what is different from regular laminates?
The biggest difference is thickness.

The average thickness of an adult fingernail is 0.5 mm
Just looking at the number, it may not give you a sense of scale.
The average thickness of an adult fingernail is 0.5 mm.
Regular laminates are made at about this level,
0.5 mm to 1.0 mm thick.
Breenite is 0.01 mm to 0.3 mm.
That is less than one-fifth the thickness of a fingernail.
Try touching your fingernail once.
It is much thinner than that. ^^
Why does this thickness difference matter?
Because it is thin,
tooth reduction can be minimized,
and light can pass through naturally,
allowing it to create a feel similar to the original tooth.

Why has the no-prep method attracted attention?
Wonjin Dental Clinic
To understand Breenite (no-prep laminate),
you should first know the limitations of conventional laminates.
Traditional laminates required a substantial amount of tooth surface to be shaved down in order to attach ceramic.

If dentin is exposed during this process,
sensitivity symptoms may occur,
and there is also a risk of nerve damage.
This is why many people hesitated to get laminates because of the burden of having to grind down the teeth.
Once teeth are reduced, they do not grow back.
That is why, when I treat patients,
I always ask myself the same question.
Is this treatment something that is healthy, painless,
and makes you look more natural and beautiful?
Breenite is a treatment that starts from this question.
Minimal intervention, with no reduction or only the slightest refinement of the tooth surface
A treatment that does not do what is unnecessary,
rather than doing more just because it is common
That is what led me to treat Breenite.

Pay attention to translucency, not just whiteness
Wonjin Dental Clinic
The most common request I receive in the clinic is,
“Please make it as white as possible.”
However, after treatment,
there are often people who feel,
“It is white, but somehow it looks unnatural.”
Why is that?
What determines naturalness is not the color,
but translucency.

Source: Stefan Roozen, The color gradient of natural teeth and their intelligent imitation, International Dentistry – African Edition, 2021.
If you look closely at natural teeth,
the tips are slightly translucent,
and the color becomes deeper closer to the gums.
There is a sense that light passes through softly.
Thicker prosthetic restorations block this light.
So even if the color is matched naturally,
they can still look opaque.
That is where the expression “it looks like plastic” comes from.

Because Breenite is thin,
light can pass through to some extent.
That is why the translucency of natural teeth tends to be better preserved.
However, this also depends on the degree of discoloration.
If the discoloration is severe,
the underlying color may show through a thin prosthetic restoration.
So when choosing a color, rather than insisting on making it as white as possible,
you should discuss it in a way that matches your facial tone and the teeth next to it. ^^

These are the people who consider Breenite
Wonjin Dental Clinic
In the clinic, when people consult about Breenite,
they are generally in one of these situations.
1) Gaps between front teeth 2) Imbalance in the shape or size of teeth 3) Discoloration that does not improve with whitening 4) People who feel burdened by tooth reduction
Because it can improve shape, size, and color as desired while preserving the natural tooth,
it is also a suitable method for people who want changes in a short period of time.
However, Breenite is not the right answer for everyone.
Depending on the condition, another treatment may be more suitable.
What matters is confirming whether it is the right treatment for your situation.
※The information shared today compares the characteristics of each method. Therefore, please do not decide on treatment based on this alone; diagnosis and planning should always be discussed with medical staff.

To conclude
Wonjin Dental Clinic
Breenite is an aesthetic treatment that is maintained over a long period once performed.
So rather than recommending treatment unconditionally,
it is important first to check whether it is truly a necessary choice for your current dental condition.

Wonjin Dental Clinic
In some cases, whitening is sufficient,
and in others, depending on the condition, Breenite may be suitable.
If you are considering front-tooth Breenite,
I recommend checking which option fits your condition.
Sincerely,
Park Jae-hyung
