Hello. I am Dr. Jae-hyung Park, Director of Wonjin Dental Clinic.

I do not usually take commemorative photos separately, but
celebrities and influencers visit us to receive veneer treatment.
As a result, I am often asked, “How are celebrity veneers different from regular veneers?”
The conclusion is that there is no separate treatment or material specifically called celebrity veneers.
The difference lies not in the material, but in how it is made and how it is designed to suit the face.

Features and Differences of Celebrity Veneers
Because celebrities work in an appearance-focused profession, they are especially reluctant to have veneers that look obvious.
That is why they choose the most natural-looking approach possible.
Specifically, the material is built up layer by layer by hand using a brush.
This allows the color and translucency to be adjusted very precisely,
including the characteristic appearance of natural teeth, which become more translucent toward the tips.

In addition, the color and shape are carefully customized to suit the person’s facial shape and overall image,
so they blend naturally with the original teeth when the person smiles.
Although building the veneers up by hand one layer at a time requires more time and care,
its greatest advantage is that it allows each person’s unique tooth characteristics and color to be reflected delicately.

By contrast, veneers milled and produced by machine have limitations in how color can be expressed.
Because they can easily result in a uniform and monotonous color,
once attached, the teeth may look disconnected from the rest of the face and appear noticeably artificial.
This is why the level of naturalness can vary greatly depending on how the veneers are made, even when they are all veneers.
The front teeth are especially important because they are the first part people see when you smile. Even a one- or two-shade difference in color or a subtle difference in shape can significantly change your impression.
That is why, particularly in celebrity cases, the goal is not simply to make the teeth as white as possible.
Instead, the most suitable brightness and translucency are selected by considering the facial tone, lip color, and skin tone as well.

Why Do People Regret Celebrity Veneers?
Have you heard people say that they regret getting veneers?
A celebrity who had veneers in the past once shared news of regretting the treatment, along with a photo showing a restoration that had come off, saying,
“My teeth are sensitive, and so much of them were shaved down that I regret it.”
In fact, cases like this are often closer to treatment involving extensive tooth reduction, such as crowns, rather than veneers.
That much of the tooth structure had been removed.

As shown in the image above, veneers can sometimes be placed after lightly shaping only the surface of the tooth, while crowns require considerably more tooth reduction.
If you are considering veneers but have not had the treatment yet, be sure to read the article below beforehand.
It explains in detail how to reduce the chances of regret.
Why Can Removing Too Much Tooth Structure Cause Problems with Veneers?
The surface of a tooth is covered by hard enamel. If excessive reduction removes all of the enamel,
the veneers must be bonded to the dentin underneath.
The problem is that dentin has weaker bonding strength than enamel.
As a result, the restorations may come off over time, or cavities may develop through gaps as a side effect.
Many of the cases in which celebrities regretted their treatment resulted from this excessive tooth reduction.

Because a tooth that has been shaved down cannot be restored to its original condition,
how much tooth structure to remove is not simply a matter of treatment technique. It is an important decision that can affect your dental health for decades to come.
Recent Veneer Techniques: No-Prep and Minimal-Prep Veneers
This is why techniques have changed considerably in recent years.
Unlike in the past, the goal is now to use no-prep or minimal-prep techniques.
(Of course, the condition of the teeth must meet the necessary requirements.)
Minimizing the amount of surface reduction is not only intended to reduce discomfort.
It is also intended to preserve as much enamel as possible and improve bonding strength.
The stronger the bond, the less likely the veneers are to come off, and the less likely gaps are to form, which can also reduce side effects such as cavities.
In other words, preserving the natural teeth can lead to results that last longer and are safer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. Is the treatment very painful?
The procedure is generally performed under anesthesia. Even when the teeth are shaped, the work is mainly limited to the surface enamel, which has no sensation, so severe pain is uncommon.
However, you may feel pressure and vibration.
The less tooth structure that is removed, the less sensitivity and discomfort you can generally expect.
Of course, the condition and number of teeth, as well as sensitivity, vary from person to person, so the number of appointments and the experience may differ.
Q. How can I make veneers last longer?
After treatment, veneers can chip or come off if you have a habit of biting through hard foods with your front teeth or if you grind your teeth, so caution is needed. If you grind your teeth severely, wearing a mouthguard while sleeping may also help.
Ultimately, regular checkups and basic care, such as thorough brushing and flossing, are the most important factors in maintaining the results for a long time.

Selection Criteria for Veneers You Will Not Regret
-
Preliminary treatment: Cavities and gum problems must be treated first before undergoing the procedure.
-
Conservative approach: If you are told that a large amount of tooth structure must be removed, be sure to also consider whether a less invasive option, such as orthodontic treatment, may be more appropriate.
-
Advance confirmation: It is also a good criterion to check whether the clinic offers a mock-up or simulation that allows you to preview the design before treatment.
-
Customized design: Above all, the most important thing is to choose a clinic that helps you find the shape that best suits your face and teeth, rather than simply trying to make your teeth look “like a celebrity’s.”

In summary, celebrity veneers are not a special product. The difference lies in the technique and design: preserving the natural teeth as much as possible, building the veneers up one layer at a time by hand, and designing them to suit the face.
If you have a desired image in mind, use it as a starting point, but I recommend confirming the approach that is right for you through an accurate diagnosis.
Because teeth cannot be restored once they have been shaped, the best way to avoid regret is to take your time, learn enough about the options, and then make your decision.
Thank you. This has been Dr. Jae-hyung Park.
