Covered scaling, Yonsei Jeongwon Dental Clinic
Hello, this is Yonsei Jeongwon Dental Clinic in Daechi-dong.
As the end of the year approaches, many people want to get dental scaling along with their health checkups. Scaling, which removes tartar and plaque, is one of the most basic preventive treatments for maintaining gum and tooth health. In particular, because it is covered by national health insurance once a year, we hope you do not miss the annual insurance benefit before this year ends.
Annual scaling?
Basic care for protecting tooth health
Scaling (tartar removal) is a procedure that removes plaque and tartar to prevent and treat oral diseases, and it is recommended that you receive it regularly at least once a year even if you do not have any abnormal symptoms in your teeth. Accordingly, the National Health Insurance Service applies health insurance coverage to scaling. Eligible recipients are health insurance subscribers aged 19 or older. If you receive it as non-covered care, it costs around 50,000 to 70,000 KRW, but with coverage you can receive the procedure once a year at a copayment rate of 30%, costing about 15,000 to 20,000 KRW.
However, because the health insurance coverage for scaling is applied on a yearly basis, if you do not receive the procedure between January 1 and December 31 of the relevant year, that year's opportunity for insurance coverage disappears. So it would be good to get scaling in advance and not miss the chance.
If you cannot remember whether you received scaling treatment this year, you can check through the NHIS website or mobile app (The건강보험). If you use the website, go to 'Website → Login → Customer Service → Personal Civil Service → Insurance Benefits → Tartar Removal Treatment Information Lookup' to check when you received scaling and whether you are eligible for coverage. If you use the mobile app, you can check through 'The건강보험 → Customer Service → Lookup → Tartar Removal Treatment Information Lookup → Simple Authentication (or Login)'.

Why is annual scaling important?
-
Removal of tartar and plaque: Tartar cannot be removed on its own and causes gum disease and cavities.
-
Prevention of gum inflammation: Regular removal lowers the risk of periodontal disease.
-
Prevention of cavities: Bacteria in plaque cause cavities, so tartar removal itself has a preventive effect.
-
Teeth whitening effect: Removing surface stains makes teeth look cleaner.
However, immediately after scaling, the tooth surface becomes cleaner and more exposed. At this point, if fluoride is applied, fluoride is absorbed much more efficiently onto the tooth surface, forming a protective layer and greatly increasing the preventive effect against cavities, according to research findings. In other words, rather than simply having scaling alone, doing scaling + fluoride application together is a much more ideal method for protecting teeth.
But fluoride is
only needed for children, right?
In fact, adults also need fluoride application sufficiently, and its effectiveness has been proven in practice. In particular, the importance of fluoride is greater when the risk of cavities is high or when the gums have receded and the tooth roots are exposed. Root surface cavities are a type of cavity that increases rapidly in adults and older adults. Because this area is especially weak, fluoride is very helpful in preventing cavities. In particular, according to papers, there are many results showing that the practical effect is large in high-risk groups.
Adults who especially need fluoride application
-
People who get cavities frequently: Fluoride strengthens the enamel on the tooth surface and increases resistance to acids that cause cavities.
-
When the gums have receded and the roots are exposed: In adults, the gums may recede and expose the roots, and because roots are very vulnerable to cavities, fluoride is needed.
-
People with dry mouth: When there is less saliva, cavities develop more easily, so fluoride acts as a protective layer.
-
People wearing orthodontic appliances: It suppresses bacteria from settling on the teeth and strengthens the tooth surface.
Scaling → organizing the tooth surface → forming a protective layer with fluoride application
During the remaining period of this year, be sure to receive your annual covered scaling under health insurance, and if you also proceed with fluoride application after scaling, the preventive effect against cavities will be even greater. Prevention is the best treatment for teeth.
At Yonsei Jeongwon Dental Clinic, we also provide guidance on fluoride application along with annual covered scaling, so before the end of the year, get your scaling done, and if needed, receive fluoride application as well! Prevention is the best treatment.
