The foundation of healthy gums starts with “thorough removal of tartar”
Even if you brush carefully three times a day,
plaque slowly builds up in areas your toothbrush can’t reach.
Over time, this tartar can lead to gum inflammation, bad breath,
and in severe cases, periodontal disease.
That is why the National Health Insurance Service supports “annual scaling coverage once a year” for adults aged 19 and older.

What is scaling?
Scaling is not just simple “teeth cleaning.”
It is a periodontal preventive treatment that keeps the gums clean by removing tartar (calcified plaque)
and bacterial film attached to the tooth surface using an ultrasonic device.
Because tartar cannot be removed by brushing alone,
egular scaling is absolutely necessary.
You should get it sooner, especially if you have any of the following symptoms
When your gums bleed
When bad breath has gotten worse
When your teeth feel like they are spreading apart
When your gums are swollen or itchy

Once a year, covered by insurance without 부담!
Since 2013, scaling has been
a preventive treatment covered by health insurance.
Adults aged 19 and older can receive scaling with insurance coverage once a year
(based on January 1 to December 31).
In other words, insurance coverage is renewed again every January 1,
so please remember that “even if you had it done last year, you can get it again this year.”
After scaling, tartar is removed, the gums become healthier,
and brushing becomes much more effective.

Things to keep in mind after scaling
You may experience a little sensitivity or bleeding after the procedure,
but this is part of the gum recovery process as the tartar that had been covering the area is removed.
It usually stabilizes within about 2 to 3 days.
After scaling,
avoid hot or irritating foods for about a day
brush with soft bristles
keep the mouth clean with floss and interdental brushes
These steps can help your gums recover.

If your gums are weak or bleed often,
gum treatment (periodontal curettage, root planing) may be needed instead of simple scaling,
so it is best to proceed after consulting a specialist.
How should scaling frequency be managed?
Although health insurance coverage applies once a year,
for individuals who tend to build up tartar easily or have a history of gum disease,
management every 6 months is recommended.
In particular, smokers, people who often drink coffee or colored beverages,
and those undergoing orthodontic treatment should shorten the scaling interval
to increase preventive effectiveness.
At Seoul Ob Dental Hospital,
we operate a personalized recall system for patients receiving regular scaling,
so you can continue consistent care without forgetting.
