How long does it take for the bleeding to stop after wisdom tooth extraction?
This is the question most often asked during wisdom tooth consultations.
In particular, wisdom teeth are often located deep
and extraction is not easy in many cases,
so people worry a lot:
“What if the bleeding lasts a long time?”
“What if the bleeding doesn’t stop properly?”
Today, I’ll explain the bleeding-control process after wisdom tooth extraction,
how long to bite on gauze,
and what actions must absolutely be avoided. 🦷✨

✅ Bleeding control after wisdom tooth extraction
Why is it important?
Because wisdom tooth extraction is performed by cutting the gum and bone,
or in some cases by removing the tooth in pieces,
bleeding for 2–3 hours right after the extraction
is very normal.
However, if bleeding is not properly controlled,
not only can healing be delayed, but pain can last longer,
and the risk of complications such as dry socket may increase.
So what should you keep in mind
to control the bleeding well? 👀

✅ Gauze after wisdom tooth extraction
The gauze placed in your mouth at the dental clinic after extraction
should be bitten down firmly
for about 2–3 hours.
Sometimes people bite too lightly,
saying, “I’m worried it might irritate the wound...”
but proper pressure actually helps bleeding stop better.
Some people also worry, “Won’t biting too hard make the wound open up?”
but if an incision was made,
it has already been sutured,
and the pressure itself helps blood clot formation.
✅ While biting on the gauze,
please avoid these actions!
🚫 Talking
If your jaw and tongue move, the gauze can shift
and bleeding may not stop properly.
🚫 Eating
Chewing directly irritates the wound,
so the gauze cannot be pressed down properly.
🚫 Spitting out saliva repeatedly
If you keep spitting because saliva or blood is uncomfortable,
the pressure inside the mouth can prevent bleeding from stopping properly.
Even if it feels uncomfortable, it is better to swallow it,
and if it is too uncomfortable, please only let it drain lightly
and wipe it away.

Also, after wisdom tooth extraction,
be sure to avoid actions that interfere with bleeding control.
✔ First, using a straw creates negative pressure in the mouth,
which can dislodge the forming blood clot
and increase the risk of dry socket.
✔ Cigarettes constrict blood vessels, increase bleeding,
delay wound healing, and even raise the risk of infection,
so you should avoid smoking for at least 2–3 days,
and ideally for a week or more.
✔ Alcohol also causes blood vessels to dilate,
which can trigger bleeding again,
so please avoid it for about a week.

A little bit of blood showing is a natural occurrence,
but if any of the following happen,
please contact the dental clinic or visit the emergency room.
📌 If the amount of bleeding does not decrease over time
and instead increases
📌 If blood pools to the point that it is hard to swallow
📌 If bleeding has stopped but there is a bad smell or pain in the mouth
Bleeding control after wisdom tooth extraction is the key to recovery.
If you follow proper bleeding-control management,
the recovery process will go much more smoothly,
and you will be able to recover quickly
without unnecessary pain or complications! ❤
