Can Veneers Be Done Even with an Underbite?

We are often asked this question during veneer consultations:

> “My lower teeth bite in front of my upper teeth. > > Is treatment possible for me too?”

When the upper and lower teeth bite in the opposite position, this is called an underbite.

Many people believe that veneers are not possible at all if they have an underbite, but that is not always the case.

If only one or two teeth bite in the opposite position, those areas can be addressed first before proceeding.

The patient we are introducing today was exactly such a case.

Condition at the Initial Visit

The patient’s main concern was the shape of the front teeth.

✔ The two central front teeth looked large, making them stand out when smiling

✔ The lateral teeth were small and positioned inward, making the alignment look uneven

✔ The teeth were also somewhat yellowish, and whitening had not made a significant difference

These are commonly referred to as “bunny teeth.”

However, the examination revealed something the patient had not been aware of.

One lower left canine was positioned outside the upper teeth and bit in front of them.

Before treatment

It was barely noticeable from the outside, but this single tooth was quite important when planning veneers.

Detailed Diagnosis and Treatment Plan

Veneers are a treatment in which thin ceramic shells are bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth.

Therefore, where the force is placed during chewing can determine the outcome.

If there are teeth that bite in the opposite position:

✅ Force may become concentrated in that area, causing the ceramic to break

✅ The upper front teeth may not be able to be made as long as desired

✅ If the veneers are made based only on appearance, a catching sensation may remain after they are bonded

For this reason, we first adjusted the bite before deciding on the shape in this case.

How Was the Treatment Performed?

We treated the six upper front teeth—from canine to canine—with Objetro Pure.

Objetro Pure is a line of treatment that involves almost no tooth reduction.

This time as well, we preserved as much of the natural teeth as possible.

We also made a very slight adjustment to the lower canine that was positioned outward, removing the area that was catching.

There was also a reason for treating six teeth rather than four front teeth.

If only four teeth are treated, the differences in color and shape from the adjacent teeth remain visible.

Two Things We Paid Particular Attention To

✅ First, we distributed the force.

We shifted the area that received force when the jaw moved sideways toward the central front teeth.

Ceramic is more vulnerable when force is concentrated in one place and lasts longer when the force is distributed.

✅ Second, we did not overextend the length.

Because of the contact with the lower teeth, the lateral teeth could not be made longer.

Instead, we created a natural difference in length between the central front teeth and the lateral teeth.

Color Matching Was Coordinated Directly at Our In-House Laboratory

> “Making all six teeth exactly the same length can actually make them look less natural.”

Natural teeth already have subtle differences in length.

Seoul Ove Dental Hospital operates an in-house dental laboratory, allowing the dental technician to directly observe the patient’s tooth color and match the shade and translucency.

In-house dental laboratory – the entire process is carried out within the hospital.

Because we adjusted the bite first, the treatment was completed without a catching sensation after the veneers were bonded.

After treatment

The appearance of the two central front teeth standing out on their own was balanced.

The visible tooth line when smiling also aligned smoothly with the lip line.

However, the lifespan of veneers can vary depending on usage habits and care.

Not every case of an underbite can be treated this way.

As in this case, when only one or two teeth bite in the opposite position, treatment may be possible while addressing those areas together.

However, the situation is different if the lower jaw itself protrudes forward or if all of the front teeth bite in the opposite position.

In such cases, it may be difficult to resolve the issue with veneers alone, and other treatment, such as orthodontics, may be necessary.
