Hello.
I am Yoo Hyo-seop, a dermatologist with 23 years of experience.
"Isn't there a way to get rid of pores entirely?"
"What should I do to make my pores smaller?"
I meet many patients in the clinic who are concerned about pores.
In particular, enlarged pores around the nose and cheeks are hard to cover even with makeup, so many people feel stressed about them.
Today, I’ll talk about everything from the reasons pores become enlarged to home care and effective procedures.

What are pores?
To understand pores, you first need to know about sebaceous glands.
Our skin has glands called sebaceous glands that produce oil.
The passage through which the oil produced by the sebaceous glands comes out onto the skin surface is the "pore."
In particular, sebaceous glands are well developed around the forehead and nose, the so-called T-zone, which is why pores in this area are more noticeable.
2. Are skin without pores healthy skin?
Many people ask, "Isn't there a way to get rid of pores entirely?"
To start with the conclusion, pores cannot be removed 100%.
And in fact, they should not be removed.
That is because pores are normal outlets for sebum, and sebum plays a role in protecting the skin.

For example, when you get burned, the skin layers are damaged and the pores and sebaceous glands are destroyed.
Then normal sweat secretion does not work properly, and because the oily components that protect the skin are no longer produced, the skin barrier cannot be formed properly.
Rather, this kind of skin becomes less healthy.
So it is better to think of pores as something to be "managed," not "eliminated."
3. Three reasons pores become enlarged
So why do pores become enlarged?
There are three main reasons.
First, excessive sebum production.
This is something people with acne-prone skin often experience.
When you are under stress or do not cleanse properly, sebum accumulates inside the pores.
Then the pores stretch and become enlarged.
Second, skin sagging due to aging.
As skin loses elasticity with age, the pores also stretch.
In particular, the pores become longer vertically, making them look larger.
Third, bad habits.
When acne appears, squeezing it too hard with your hands can destroy the surrounding tissue and actually make the pores larger.
So when acne appears, it is important to consult a dermatologist at the right time,
and to receive treatment in a clean environment to help prevent the pores from becoming larger.
4. How to reduce pores: home care
The key to pore care is not doing anything that blocks the pores.
Here are some care methods you can do at home.
First, proper cleansing.
If cleansing is delayed or not done properly, sebum builds up in the pores.
It is best to cleanse right away at the end of the day instead of putting it off.
Second, avoid using oily cosmetics.
Oil-rich cosmetics can clog pores, so it is important to choose products that suit your skin type.
Third, improve your diet.
To reduce sebum production, it helps to cut back on high-fat foods and irritating foods.
Fourth, early treatment of acne.
When acne appears, it is best to treat it properly early on so the inflammation does not spread further.
Rather than squeezing it forcefully with your hands, I recommend getting clean treatment at a dermatology clinic.
5. How to reduce pores: dermatology procedures
Once pores have already enlarged, there are limits to how much they can improve with home care alone.
In such cases, getting help from dermatology procedures is effective for creating a more tightened state and maintaining it for a long time.
▶ Thermage (radiofrequency treatment)
Thermage is a procedure that uses radiofrequency to apply heat to the dermis or deeper layers of the skin and help stimulate collagen production.
Its main function is to maintain skin elasticity and keep the skin looking youthful.
However, sebaceous glands are oily tissue, so electricity conducts well through them.
Therefore, during Thermage treatment, energy is also applied to the sebaceous glands, which can reduce sebum production and produce the added effect of shrinking pores as well.

▶ Skin Botox
There is a small muscle next to the pore called the "arrector pili muscle."
Skin Botox is a procedure in which diluted Botox is injected into the skin layer.
This can paralyze the arrector pili muscle, resulting in a pore-shrinking effect.
▶ Laser treatments such as Fraxel and Genius
If you want to produce more collagen, you can use laser devices such as Sculptra, Fraxel, and Genius.
These procedures create microscopic heat damage in the skin to induce collagen regeneration and help normalize enlarged pores.
▶ Rejuran
Rejuran is a skin booster that helps skin regeneration and can help with pore care by improving skin elasticity.
In closing,
To summarize, pores are something to manage, not eliminate.
For pore care, it is important to maintain healthy lifestyle habits that can help reduce excessive sebum production and to cleanse properly.
For pores that are already enlarged, receiving procedures such as Thermage, Fraxel, Genius, Rejuran, and Skin Botox appropriately can help create a tightened state and maintain it for a long time.
If you are worried about pores, I recommend not worrying alone and instead consulting a specialist.
