Ulthera Lifting FAQs Explained by a Board-Certified Dermatologist: The Complete Guide <Ulthera Prime>
Hello,
I’m Lee Won-shin, a dermatologist with 23 years of experience.
In consultations in the clinic, I often hear similar questions about Ulthera.
“Is it okay to get it even if I don’t have much cheek volume?”
“Is it more comfortable to get it under sleep anesthesia?”
As such, Ulthera is a procedure many people are interested in, but there are also many cases where they do not fully understand its exact principles or process.
In particular, I often meet people who decide on the procedure based only on reviews from others or information on the internet, and end up disappointed because the results differ from what they expected.

So today, for those of you considering an Ulthera procedure, I’d like to briefly organize the things people most often ask about,
what principle produces Ulthera’s effects
which people it is suitable for
what important criteria must be checked before the procedure
I hope this will be helpful to those of you thinking about the procedure.^^

Ulthera Prime principle

Ulthera is a lifting device that uses focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy to target the SMAS layer, the fascial layer in the deeper part of the skin.
Rather than delivering energy to the skin surface, it concentrates energy deep inside to tighten sagging tissue and promote the recovery of elasticity.
There are tips that target various depths, and the most commonly used are the 4.5 mm tip and the 3.0 mm tip.
4.5 mm tip: deep lifting targeting the fascial layer
3.0 mm tip: lifting that organizes the dermal layer and skin structure
When these two depths are used in combination according to the condition of the face, a more natural contour-improving effect can be expected.

For example, when there is a moderate amount of cheek volume, the treatment can help organize sagging tissue and make the jawline look more defined,
and when there is a lot of cheek volume, some effect on the fat layer may also create the appearance of a slimmer facial line.
However, if there is very little cheek volume, the fat layer may shrink and make the face look more hollow, so it cannot be considered a good procedure for everyone.
- Ulthera is a procedure where “design” is important.
One of Ulthera’s advantages is that partial treatment is possible.
For example,
double chin
marionette lines
jawline contour
The treatment can be performed by adjusting the number of shots according to the desired area.

One Ulthera tip contains about 2,400 shots, and because it can be divided and used only as needed,
small areas can use about 50 shots
the full face can use several hundred shots or more
and so on, it can be designed according to each person’s condition.
However, in every case, getting only Ulthera is not enough to produce sufficient results.
If skin elasticity has decreased significantly or the sagging is complex, it may be better to combine other devices.

For example, combining it with a microwave device such as fitting lifting can provide a more natural and better result.
The reason Ulthera and fitting lifting work well together would make this post too long, so I’ll attach a related post at the bottom.^^

- Three important criteria that must be checked before the procedure
If you are considering an Ulthera procedure, there are several important points you should be sure to check.
First, confirm through an accurate consultation whether Ulthera is suitable for your face.
Rather than deciding on a procedure based only on internet reviews or other people’s experiences, a professional evaluation of your skin condition and facial structure is necessary.

The second is anesthesia.
Ulthera is known as a procedure with relatively significant pain, so some people consider sleep anesthesia.
However, in a sleep state, you may move unconsciously, and the tip may not make accurate contact, which can increase the risk of burns.
That is why I personally recommend reducing pain by more than 80% through nerve anesthesia or local anesthesia and performing the procedure while the patient is still able to communicate.

The third is whether genuine equipment and genuine tips are being used.
Because Ulthera is expensive equipment, there have been cases reported where some medical institutions use refurbished tips or non-genuine tips.
Detailed information about genuine equipment and tips is available on the Ulthera website, so please be sure to check it.
In closing,
Sagging skin is a natural change that occurs as we age.
However, depending on how that change is managed, the impression of the face and your confidence can differ.

Ulthera is a procedure that can provide a lifting effect by delivering energy deep into the skin, but it is not a good treatment for everyone.
To expect a more natural and satisfying result, various factors such as facial volume, skin elasticity, and fat distribution must be considered together.
Therefore, when deciding on a procedure, rather than simply choosing based on information such as “it’s famous” or “it works well,”
I recommend first checking through sufficient consultation whether it is the right treatment for your face.^^
