Hello.
I am Yoo Hyo-seob, a dermatologist with 23 years of experience.
When consulting on lip fillers, there is one question I hear most often.
“Is lip filler safe?”
“Won’t it look unnaturally obvious?”
“What should I do if side effects occur?”
The lips are located at the center of the face,
and they are one of the areas that naturally draw the eye when you speak or smile.
So even a small change in lip volume can make the whole face look more lively,
but if overdone, it can also create an awkward impression.
Today, based on what I explained in the video,
I will organize everything from who may need lip filler
to side effects to watch for and how to care for yourself after the procedure.

Who seeks lip filler?
Some people are naturally born with thin lips,
and some people’s lips gradually become thinner with age.
Just like the skin, the lips can lose elasticity over time
and lose volume.
As that happens, the lip line may look less defined than before,
the lips may appear flatter,
or the whole face may give off a slightly tired impression.
In such cases, lip filler can help compensate for the missing volume
and create a more lively appearance.
It can also be used to help balance left-right asymmetry of the lips
or improve concerns about the shape of the corners of the mouth.
However, one important point here is this.
Lip filler is not a procedure that simply looks better just because more is added.
The thickness of the lips, the lip line, the direction of the mouth corners, and the proportions of the entire face should all be considered
when deciding which area needs how much volume.
2. Can lip filler be adjusted to the shape you want?
These days, many people visit with a specific lip shape in mind.
Slightly upturned mouth corners,
slightly fuller lower lips,
or a more defined cupid’s bow are all examples of
more clearly desired looks.

The hyaluronic acid fillers commonly used for lip filler
are made based on a substance that also exists in our skin.
The firmness and duration of fillers can vary by product,
and for an area like the lips, which moves a lot,
it is important to choose a filler that is soft and can settle in naturally
rather than one that is too firm.
Another advantage is that with hyaluronic acid filler,
correction is possible with a dissolving injection if needed.
Of course, it is most important to design and inject accurately from the start,
but if the result is not satisfying or feels excessive,
adjustments can be made based on the medical professional’s judgment.
That is why lip filler is a procedure considered not only by younger people,
but also by middle-aged and older adults whose lip volume has decreased due to aging.
3. Are there side effects with lip filler?
Because lip filler is also an injection procedure,
side effect possibilities must of course be considered.
In particular, the lips are an area with a very rich blood supply.
Therefore, if the procedure is performed carelessly,
the filler can enter a blood vessel and interfere with blood flow,
which may cause issues such as skin color changes, severe pain, and in rare cases tissue damage.
Although lip filler is often described as a relatively simple procedure,
in reality it requires a very strong understanding of anatomy and plenty of experience.
Even within a small area like the lips,
blood vessels, mucosa, and muscle movement are intricately connected.
So rather than simply making the shape look pretty,
it is important to inject the right amount into a safe layer.
For those considering lip filler,
I recommend choosing a medical professional with sufficient experience
rather than deciding based only on price or a trending shape.
4. Post-procedure care precautions
Lip filler is not a procedure that completely settles in place immediately after injection.
Right after the procedure, the filler needs time to settle.
Usually, it is best to avoid excessive stimulation of the lips for at least three days.
Avoid hot or very cold foods,
and be careful about forcefully sucking through a straw.
Also, alcohol and smoking cause the muscles around the mouth to move more
and may place a burden on the recovery process,
so it is best to avoid them as much as possible right after the procedure.
The lips are a much more active area than we think.
Every time you speak, eat, or make facial expressions,
the muscles around the lips are used repeatedly.
Therefore, for a few days after the procedure,
it is important to reduce unnecessary stimulation
so the filler can settle stably.
5. Should you look only at the lips, or also at aging around the mouth?
When getting lip filler, looking only at the lips may not be enough.
In particular, for people who have developed fine lines around the mouth as they age,
and whose volume around the mouth has also decreased,
it may be difficult to achieve the desired level of satisfaction by filling only the lips.
The lips are a small area in the center of the face,
but they move together with the surrounding skin.
If the area around the mouth is hollowed out or the fine lines are deep,
simply making the lips fuller can make the overall balance look awkward.
In such cases, along with lip filler,
anti-aging treatments around the mouth can also be considered.
For example, combining treatments such as Sculptra, which stimulates collagen production,
or procedures that help supplement skin elasticity and volume,
may help improve the liveliness and balance of the entire area around the mouth, not just the lips.
Ultimately, the important question is not “How much should the lips be enlarged?”
but rather how naturally the lips fit within the entire face.

In closing
The lips are located at the center of the face,
and because their color and shape stand out more than other areas,
even a small change can alter the impression.
Lip filler can help add volume to thin lips,
correct asymmetry,
and create a more lively appearance.
However, because the lips are a highly vascular and very mobile area,
choosing a safe product, using the proper amount, and injecting at the correct location are all extremely important.
Also, in cases where aging has progressed significantly,
it is better to examine not only the lips but also the skin, volume, and fine lines around the mouth
to expect a more natural result.
If you are considering lip filler,
rather than simply following a trendy shape,
please discuss thoroughly with a specialist whether the lips suit your face
and whether aging around the mouth also needs to be considered.
