There are more people than you might think who are considering
switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy, or vice versa.
“Which one is more effective?”,
“Is there one with fewer side effects?”
These questions often come up during consultations.
Although the two medications may seem to be in the same class,
they differ in how they work and in how people respond to them,

so rather than making a simple comparison, it is important to
set criteria and choose accordingly.
Today, I’ll organize the key points you should know before switching.

- Mounjaro vs. Wegovy: differences in mechanism of action
Both medications are injectable treatments that reduce appetite
and increase fullness,
but there are differences in how they work.

Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) has a dual-action structure that works on
both GLP-1 and GIP.
In addition to suppressing appetite, it has the characteristic of
regulating insulin response at the same time.
On the other hand, Wegovy (semaglutide) is a single GLP-1
action medication.
It is structured to focus on maintaining fullness by reducing
food intake and delaying gastric emptying.
- Weight-loss effect: how big is the actual difference?
Looking at research results, the average amount of weight loss
is often greater with Mounjaro.

Mounjaro
Some studies report cases of a reduction of up to around 15–20%
from the initial body weight.
Wegovy is also a medication with clear effectiveness, and weight
loss of around 10–15% has been reported.

Wegovy
What matters here, however, is not the average numbers but
individual response.
Even with the same medication, the results can vary greatly
depending on diet, basal metabolism, and lifestyle patterns.
So rather than approaching it as a drug that will “definitely make
you lose more weight,” the more important criterion is how your
body responds to it.
- Side-effect comparison: which reactions are more common?
The most common side effects of both medications are
gastrointestinal symptoms. Nausea, bloating, and discomfort due to
decreased appetite are typical examples.

Because Mounjaro has a broader range of action, some people may
feel stronger stomach discomfort during the initial adjustment
period.
However, after the body adjusts, it often remains stable.
Wegovy tends to produce side effects in a relatively predictable
pattern.

Because the dose is increased step by step, the adjustment period
tends to be relatively gradual.
- Criteria for switching and points to watch out for
There are usually three reasons to consider switching.

First, the effect is less than expected. If there is little change in
weight after using the medication for a certain period, changing
the medication can be considered.
Second, side effects continue. In particular, if gastrointestinal
discomfort affects daily life, adjustment is needed.
Third, the response decreases during the maintenance phase.
The important thing to note is not to switch immediately.

Because of the characteristics of the medication, it is necessary
to change it after a certain interval of time.
Also, rather than starting with the same dose, it is often adjusted
again from the initial dose.
